Book Reviews of Making FacesBook Review: An accurate, step by step look at makeup application Summary: 5 Stars
I found the book very inspiring in many ways. When I recieved "Making faces" last year, I was quite surprised how difficult makeup application can be. Kevyn goes through his steps very clearly, enabling us to recreate the same or similar results. It's quite surprising how Kevyn has captured so many dazzling effects on the same models. The book is hard to put down, because I find everything about it amazing. Especially the before & after makeovers. Thats set after my own heart. When I saw Courtney Love's makeover, I thought "it can't be her". We are so used to see her as a punk rocker. After reading this book, I took the opportunity to purchase some of the hard to find products. I had quite a fun time trying to explain whom & what they were for. "Making faces" is very inspiring to me because of the many ideas. My reason for that is that I'd rather use the more daring ideas, not forgetting my "daring is better" motto. Kevyn obviously uses that motto too! There's more to read about the models on their pages. Kevyn's point of view on his models is interesting, as I see a totally different side to each of them. What else can I say? The book is a great gift to recieve, as happened to me. I recommend it to anybody who appreciates talent makeup-wise. What I would like to see though, is Kevyn's 2nd side. He should do a makeover on himself, as a treat to his readers. It would probably be a laugh, as he's more masculine & chiseled. "Making faces" is an encouragement to woman & makeup artists of all ages. The one thing I'd be even more encouraged about is if Kevyn could put (stores where the products are available). I had to search high and low for 2 products, only to fing out they weren't the official thing. If Kevyn included the store names most shopped, and local store names too, it would make the trip more fun. The color photos are amazing! I never really appreciated photography until now! Also, I must mention the incredible hairstyles for his models. The whole book leaves me excited. The possibilities are endless now. As I said before, "Making faces" is a great inspiration for me & my friends. It even raised some interested eyebrows in my own family! Get the book now, considering the holidays are over. I think you'll appreciate Kevyn Aucoin for his magic & talent. Of course, the prices will be cheaper after 4 years of publishing. I recommend the hard cover, even though I have the paperback version. This is because I prefer books that don't fold and crease too easily. Enjoy! Bye for now. Did my review help you?
Book Review: Another Photographer's point Summary: 4 Stars
This book is a great addition, since it offers insight on how they do it. As a photographer, you should be able to understand the process, since it gives some how-to's and the step necessary.
Book Review: Archealogical Digs Can Lead To Treasures Summary: 5 Stars
I was in a play when I first became aquainted with this author/artist. I played a somewhat minor role (No small parts, only small actors), so I spent the majority of rehersals playing tic tak toe and reading interesting articles in the Onion at rehersals. One day, I was helping to clean the costume room (similar to an archealogicacl dig: there was about as much dust, and I think we figured out that some of the discarded skirts and masks dated back to 3000 B.C.). Something white amongst the grey caught my eye immediately...I had soon uncovered this book. One of the make up artists in the last play must have left it. I darted behind a rack of musty, tattered dresses, determined to conceal my prize from the other cleaner-uppers until I had gotten a better look. I cracked it open, and began flipping through. I believe the director found me there, 45 minutes later, wanting to know why on earth I had missed my cue. About thirty seconds into mid-lecture, she stooped down to see what the fuss was about and became as engrossed as I. This book is not only innovative and creative, but fun! As soon as I layed eyes on it, I wanted to try out some of the make up faces. It shows, step by step, how to create everything from a bomshell blond to an emaciated but hopeful heroine. The many different ways of using make up are truely ingenious, and I would reccomend this book to those who are looking for new make up techniques, for the independant actress, and for anyone who simply wants to try some of these out on a rainy day. Try it out...you won't regret it. But, if you plan on browsing through it while "working", try to make sure your boss doesn't catch you.
Book Review: Artistic and useful Summary: 4 Stars
I love Aucoin's work and I don't think they'll ever be one like him. He shows the art in make up but he makes it simple. The pictures of the wonderful transformations is reason enough to buy this book but the tips he gives are worth the purchase as well. I love the fact that he uses everyday women in his book as well, he illustrates that a make up is not as intimidating as it seems. I also love his stories about his connections to the models. It's a very personal and warm piece, it makes it accessible to the everyday woman, it's not as cold and sterile as most make up books. Now I'm off to make some faces.
Book Review: Awesome book! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this book for a couple years and I have to say, it's the one of the best makeup books I have. There are so many pictures and tricks that I haven't gotten through all his tips yet. I'm Chinese, so it's been difficult to find makeup ideas, but the ideas in this book are good for anybody! The section on different looks are incredible - I can have a look for any occasion. The only down side is that he doesn't list which companies make good products for his looks, but if you know makeup, or just copy down the description and bring it to a makeup counter, you'll find something that works! Anybody who wants to play with makeup or try a different look should get this book!
