Book Reviews of Making FacesBook Review: Amazing Artist Summary: 5 StarsI first saw these books when I was going to Elite Cosmetology School. I have since hoped to further my career with makeup and remembered the tips and advice in his books. I have since purchased "Face Forward". I would recommend to anyone. Even though a lot of the tips are very basic. the pictures and personal stories are what really drew me in to these books. Kevyn was an amazing artist.
Book Review: Very Interesting Summary: 5 StarsThis book is definitely a great buy. I refer back to it constantly for the great tips and fun looks to try. Kevyn Aucoin gives his personal insights as well as interesting little tidbits about the models who appear in his books. It's fun to read, and very informative. If you're looking for a step-by-step guide to make-up, this is a book you should check out.
Book Review: 4 stars because I thought there'd be more technique/how to in book Summary: 4 StarsIt's a beautiful book full of beautiful faces, but I am a makeup artist who works for brides and their bridal parties, proms and special events/occasions, so many of these 'looks' just aren't right for my clientele. There's a lot of interesting commentary about Aucoin's background, experience, and from the stars he has worked with, and I liked the sections on shading and eyebrows, but I wouldn't have purchased this book if I had first looked at in a bookstore.
Book Review: The Best Summary: 5 StarsIf you're seriously into makeup or if you're curious about what it can do to transform someone's face, Kevyn Aucoin's books are The Source, hands down. He gives plenty of tips on how to achieve various looks (in this one and in Face Forward), and the results are amazing. He goes over various looks, and offers advice how to get these looks (whether you want smoky eyes or poutier lips, or you want some kind of 1950s or 1960s look, or something totally fresh and modern). He explains brow shapes, eyeliner styles, lipstick application styles, applying blush, concealer, you name it. It's a makeup bible. And on top of that he does some amazing makeovers, of unknown women and famous women. To see Lisa Marie Presley transformed into Marilyn Monroe or Julia Roberts transformed into Julie Christie ala "Doctor Zhivago" is amazing to see. And that's just the tip of the lipstick iceberg. There are a lot of other transformations, some familiar looks and some all his own creations, and they're all astounding and beautiful. He's great with showing how to play with looks that make you look like you, only better, but also he's great in making you open your eyes to new looks and combinations.
The only bad thing -- actually it's tragic -- is that Kevyn died some years ago and we'll never get anymore books from him (though A Beautiful Life is a great retrospective, too, and there's his first, The Art of Makeup). And he took a lot of the pictures in the books, so it shows what an amazing photographer he was. There'll never be another one like Mr. Aucoin, but at least there are four books showcasing his amazing and timeless magical ways with makeup.
Book Review: Making Faces is by far one of the best! Summary: 5 Stars I have to say that I am a huge fan of Kevyn. He was truely the best, and although I didn't know him personally, I know he was truly a master at make-up, THE BEST! It is a down right tradgedy that he is no-longer with us, thank God he left us his "secrets" in works of literature like, Making Faces. Like Kevyn, I have been playing with make-up since I was 5. This book has absolutely great photos, step by step procedeures, and is very easy to follow. Did I mention it has great photos? I'm a graphic designer by trade, and this book impresses me thoroughly! In my opinion Making Faces is a must have, for anybody into make-up, girls and guys. 5 stars!
