This is a well-written, sophisticated and nuanced introduction into the meanders of the ancient system of gender self-fashioning and divination. Gleason is fluent in contextualising the reversibility of the ancient male/female dichotomy and the anxiety that followed it, as well as the construction of a whole pseudo-scientific constellation of control mechanisms, which served as bulwarks against aberration, but were likely to backfire at every turn. Gleason's book is a significant addition to classical gender studies, as well as a necessary supplement to the study of ancient science - strange though it sounds that physiognomy should be classified as such. For a more stereoscopic outlook, Gleason's book should be read in juxtaposition with the work of e.g. David Halperin ("One Hundred Years of Homosexuality"), John J. Winkler ("The Constraints of "Desire"), Tamsyn Barton, etc.
