Book Reviews of Making Money (Discworld)Book Review: Rincewind and repeat Summary: 1 StarsThe title of this book MUST be an admission that the discworld series should be put to sleep now. Is the next book to be titled 'For old rope'?
Book Review: Magnificent Summary: 5 StarsTerry continues to delight, once again using Discworld to mirror our own and taking the bizarre element in an otherwise 'normal' situation, in this case the revival of a national banking system through it being presided over by a small dog (Mr. Fusspot) advised by a confessed conman (Moist von Lipwig), to its logical, successful conclusions. However, compared to 'Witches and Watch'-type Pratchett productions, this is not an easy-reading book. The extended satire about 'moving off the gold standard' and 'financial modeling' may not readily strike a chord, but for those who do appreciate it, it is incisively magnificent. Terry's humour is also more subtle than previously, encouraging lingering over the irony and images ('more flounce than a turkey on a trampoline') rather than rushing the plot. All in all, one of his best books - and one which, I have found, repays rereading.
Book Review: bad Terry Summary: 2 StarsWas this written by Terry Pratched? It felt like it was squezed out in a hurry. No spark no exitement as bad as Piramids. Into the pile of the ones not to read again. Thankful there just are a very few from the discworld saga.
Book Review: Great! Summary: 5 StarsSo many great books and movies have lampooned the industries we love to hate: The film "All About Eve" comes to mind, with it's take off on how exactly people get to be stars and the sleaziness of the movie industry, as well as McCrae's book, "Katzenjammer" which is a behind-the-scenes look at the world of publishing. Enter "Making Money," a send up of the banking industry, cash, and all that goes with those worlds. Pratchett is at once funny and cynical, knowing and assuming, cloy and brilliant. This book runs the gamut from dark despair to rollicking laughter and everything in between. You'll cringe at parts too familiar and laugh out loud at others (maybe both at the same time?). Pratchett is one of the best authors around today and you can't go wrong with this book. Also try anything else in "Discworld." Would also recommend the books: DO ANTS HAVE ARSEHOLES? and the novel DON'T STOP ME NOW.
Book Review: read it again Summary: 5 StarsPerversely I enjoyed this book when I read it a second time. The problem with a "new" terry pratchet is that everyone tends to devour the book, whereas this book needs to be savoured. So if you did not enjoy the book on first reading - my advice is read it again - it really is one of his best.
