Book Reviews of Making Money (Discworld)

Book Review: More Moist, Less Good.
Summary: 2 Stars

I was pleasantly surprised to discover this on sale and quickly snapped it up and devoured it quicker. It was, on the whole, a little on the short side (or certainly felt it) and that would have been okay if it had been up to the prime Pratchett standard.

Alas, it fell short. Going Postal, the first book to feature Moist von Lipwig, failed to re-generate the Discworld cycle of books and Making Money has continued this downward spiral. The character on his own doesn't really cut the mustard as such and the plot, while appearing fresh, was composed of large numbers of old jokes and rehashed elements. By the end of the book, the chapters intended to be a fast-paced amusing anarchy concluding the plot threads (something which Pratchett has shown himself to be good at) was a positive flop, being muddled, confused and crowded, almost listing through plot elements and resolutions.

Even Vetinari seemed a little... uncharacteristicly un-Vetinari. Over the past few books just a little has happened with Ankh-Morpork and Vetinari and the city's amusing citizenry and modern-world apery.

Furthermore, the ending of the book reveals a disappointing and frankly dull revelation of the next novel in main Discworld series... yes, once more Moist von Lipwig will taken on an aspect of Ankh-Morpork's civil service. "Raising Taxes" has already been announced.

I'd welcome a re-airing of the Witches or better, the improbably antics of the Unseen Faculty over where the series seems to be going. It makes me sad.

Book Review: well i loved it !!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

bought on the day read it hated it,too disjointed, read it again a vast improvement, have now read it again great stuff, why all the carping? this is as good as most of terrys others he still tells a superb tale with wit and humour, its not his best by a long way but whatever anyone thinks its still damn good, but i dont suppose terry needs defending by me he is a master story teller whos books have given an enormous amount of pleasure to a vast amount of people and long may it continue,i really did love this book

Book Review: discworld novella
Summary: 4 Stars

I did really enjoy this but it felt just a bit too short. I really liked Moist's character and I think it's developed since 'Going Postal' (he's also a bit sexy!) I also loved Mr Bent's true character, I thought that was genius.

Book Review: Pratchett just keeps improving
Summary: 5 Stars

It's hard to know what someone who has never read a Discworld book would make of this. I write ths review as someone who has grown to love the series over the years and they just keep getting better.
I loved this book. It made me laugh out loud many times... and I mean REALLy laugh out loud. And it made me smile more times than I could count. Okay, Terry Pratchett isn't the greatest writer who ever lived and plot isn't an area in which he excels but he creates wonderful characters, great dialog and hilariously ridiculous situations. If you're the kind of person who likes Pratchett's humour then you won't find this book lacking in that department. In my opinion it's one of the funniest DW books... maybe THE funniest.
By the end of J.K Rowling's HP series I'd kind of had enough and by the end of Stephen King's Dark Tower series I was bored to death. Both of which only ran for 7 books. Thirty-odd books down the Discworld road and I'm still enjoying every minute!
Great to be back on the Discworld for a few days. Already looking forward to the next time. Thanks Terry.

Book Review: Disappointing
Summary: 2 Stars

I'm a big fan of Pratchett and have been for a long time, and I have to wonder if this book was written by somebody else.

It had remarkably few of the hallmarks of a Pratchett book - not very funny, hardly any fantasy, and (as another reviewer has said) very easy to put down - in fact, it was a bit of an effort to pick up again. Slow plot (what there was of it), muddled and confusing, and generally not very satisfying. Not one I will be reading again I think - which is a shame, because Going Postal was really quite good. (Please don't let there be a third book about the tax system...)

It was slow, and I kept waiting for something exciting to happen, but it never really appeared. The only vaguely interesting bit was about the stygium ring.

So why did I plow through it? (It was such an effort!)
Because I am a fan. This book could have been worse still and I still would have read it.
But...
His books in future are going to have to be better than this to keep me a fan. More magic! More Vimes! More WITCHES! Why trot out this dull piece of work when everyone is gagging to read about Tiffany?!

I wouldn't recommend this book. If you're looking to get introduced into smart, funny, entertaining fantasy, pick up some of his older work.
