Book Reviews of Making Money (Discworld)

Book Review: Not moist, mainly damp
Summary: 3 Stars

i, like many people, was looking forward to this new terry pratchett book and recieved not one, but two copies for my birthday as so many people were keen to buy it for me.

unfortunately and alas, i found it a less than excellent book. whilst i had enjoyed going postal considerably, revelling in the work and thoughts of Moist von Lipwig, i found this book rather complicated, with too many story lines, too many characters and too much complexity in trying to intertwine them all. Moist himself has been turned from an exciting rogue, into a dithering, unsure, love struck waste, and vetinari has been altered from an aloof, all seeing, unemotional tyrant, into a more personable, but less dynamic leader.

i'll read it again to makle sure i havent missed something but im sure its just not the good terry i love.

Book Review: not as good as usual
Summary: 3 Stars

I am a huge Pratchett fan and own a copy of everything he's written so I had to get this. However, it's not up to his usual standards, I normally can't put his books down, but found this one hard to get into and it took a lot longer than my usual two days to read it because I wasn't that bothered about picking it back up. All the elements are there, it just didn't have the same flair. The humour was there but seemed strained, as though it was trying too hard to make the scenarios funny. It's a good book in general, just a bit disappointing.

Book Review: Hope its a one-off
Summary: 3 Stars

Can only further what most other reviewers are saying... this is well below standard for Pratchett and seems to be plodding along to a formula. I hope that this is one bad book in a very long series and that Pratchett rediscovers his usual wit, humour and energy for the next one. It would be a terrible shame if this was the start of a decline of the discworld series.

Book Review: I think he only writes one in three....(allegedly)
Summary: 3 Stars

...sometimes I wonder whether he only writes a third of his fantastically funny books himself, and if the others are written by talented imitators in the manner of the Old Masters (allegedly)! Unfortunately, this is one of the ones I would put down as being by an apprentice...I keep buying them because it's worth it when a genuine Pratchett comes along!! There is, as always, the odd fantastic scene or turn of phrase that makes you chuckle.

(PS - of course I'm not REALLY suggesting he didn't write it - but I would agree with a previous reviewer that this is definitely Mr P coasting)

Book Review: So many books, so little time
Summary: 5 Stars

So many great books and movies have lampooned the industries we love to hate: The film "All About Eve" comes to mind, with it's take off on how exactly people get to be stars and the sleaziness of the movie industry, as well as McCrae's book, "Katzenjammer" which is a behind-the-scenes look at the world of publishing. Enter "Making Money," a send up of the banking industry, cash, and all that goes with those worlds. Pratchett is at once funny and cynical, knowing and assuming, cloy and brilliant. This book runs the gamut from dark despair to rollicking laughter and everything in between. You'll cringe at parts too familiar and laugh out loud at others (maybe both at the same time?). Pratchett is one of the best authors around today and you can't go wrong with this book. Also try anything else in "Discworld."
