Book Reviews of Making a Good Brain Great: The Amen Clinic Program for Achieving and Sustaining Optimal Mental Performance

Book Review: Fascinating and Life Changing
Summary: 5 Stars

I can't believe that this book is not better known. The implications of it are enormous. It is well written and logically organized and has tons of practical information for ways to more effectively use your brain. Yes, much of it is common sense, but the writer backs it up with evidence I hadn't read before. As a result, I've begun taking fish oil supplements, eating differently, working suduko puzzles and cutting back on alcohol and coffee. If I have one criticism of this book it is that there is almost too much in it. You hardly know where to begin.

I think a critic could say that Dr. Amen is self-promotional, and that the book is a long ad for his clinic. But I took this information to be the product of real enthusiasm for his work.

While this book can't answer all the mysteries of the brain, and while it can't hope to be a tool for diagnoses, it is well worth the time to read it and think about the beneficial changes you can make.

Book Review: Great Book
Summary: 5 Stars

I just loved this book. I love the author's use of alternative methods (vitamins etc) in order to enhance metal processing and function.

I also enjoyed that Amen told me what to take, how much and how often. The readability of the book was great - I could follow the author's ideas without an issue.

I highly recommend the book to anyone wanting a little bit more out of their brain. It is a great tool and I have found myself going back to it for reference on new supplements or ideas.

Book Review: A superb source of information about the brain
Summary: 5 Stars

In this audio CD Dr. Daniel G. Amen very clearly explains the functioning of the various parts of the brain and how they interact with one another and with the rest of the human body. It is not necessary to have any prior knowledge about the brain to understand it because it is basic but full of rich knowledge. So people who are already experts about the brain will also not be bored. Because Dr. Amen diverts from the conventional psychiatric approach to the brain and professionals in psychiatry, psychology and neurology have a lot to gain by listening to Dr. Amen whether they agree with him or not provided that they listen modestly and with an open mind.

Dr. Amen also explains how the brain can be damaged and how to protect it, the type of physical and mental exercises, diet, vitamins and supplements and thinking patterns necessary to develop and utilize the full potential of the brain.

He also talks about various psychiatric disorders their diagnoses and treatments, when someone should seek professional psychological / psychiatric help etc. He talks about the importance of looking at the brain images like and orthopedist looks at X rays or MRI's of the skeleton before diagnosing. This is not to replace other methods in psychiatry or clinical psychology but to assist those techniques in diagnosis and treatment. Many psychiatrists neglect looking at brain images claiming that it is unnecessary. I am no psychiatry expert but I believe many psychiatrists belittle brain imaging technology because they are not trained in it. Obviously, to be helpful the brain images must be carefully interpreted by professionals trained to do so. I have personally witnessed once in another clinic that brain imaging was not carefully interpreted to daignose but was used only to charge the patients. This is a bad intentioned application that can not be generalized. I believe that with proper use this technology is even more promising in the future.

Dr. Amen is a very good talker in the CD. The questions raised and their explanations follow a clearly understandable and enjoyable sequence. Anybody interested in developing his / her knowledge of the brain,in maximizing his / her brain's potential and / or in solving certain emotional / psychological problems will benefit from listening this audio CD or reading the book several times regularly.

Book Review: Does it work?
Summary: 2 Stars

All the reviews here give an opinion on whether it is a good read. No one has commented what impact the 15 day plan has had on them. While I have just finished the book and haven't done the formal program, I can say that I have done parts previous to this and haven't noticed any improvements in mental competency. "How to think like Leonardo DeVinci" seems a better plan in this regard.

Book Review: My favorite Dr. Amen book
Summary: 5 Stars

I have read several of Dr. Amen's books. Because of that the first few chapters were reveiw for me. But I think this is his most practical, helpful book yet. I recommmend it to everyone. I had no idea the power my brain's health had over my life. This book, along with the others, has helped me gain a new respect for my mind and as a result greater responsibilty for taking care of the most important human organ - our brain. I think every counselor, psychologist, etc should have Dr. Amen's books on their reading list. I even recommended it to my MD.
