"Making the Corps" is a brilliant work capturing every essence of the Marines. Thurough and thought-provoking, Mr. Ricks tells the story of new recruits amid the context of current events. The book is a must-read for those who consider themselves to be American, patriotic or, at least, appreciative of the sacrifices military personnel make in order to be defined by and committed to the daunting task of defending a nation, including its birthright and anyone's right to object to relatively minor details within.
The book's only flaw makes an appearance occasionaly in the form of copyediting slips and oversights, which may, in fact, be resolved by the later edition, published in 2007.
What should be taken and appreciated from this is a new understanding of the U.S. military, from the perspective of the Marine Corps--its overwhelming strengths, combined with surprisingly human weaknesses and flaws, as well as vulnerabilities that may be otherwise incomprehenisble to the American people, at large.
The author's writing style is flowing and consistent, indicative of his experience as a Wall Street Journal correspondent. The book, in no uncertain terms, is therefore a portrait that covers all details, shapes, sounds and colors of recruit life, leaving readers with a reality and a new or renewed respect for what it means to be and become a United States Marine.
