Fans have waited with much anticipation for MAMA DEAREST by E. Lynn Harris.
His untimely death had many in a state of panic wondering what will happen to
the literary legacy we all came to know through his writing and the characters
he created just for us. What better way to celebrate, than the return of
Yancey Braxton staging a career comeback. However, she is down on her luck,
nearly broke and in need of a quick restoration fix. What she gets is a ride
in S. Marcus Pinkston's Aston Martin that sets forth a plan for her to bounce
back in a major way. What she doesn't bargain for is Ava Middlebrooks, her
mother, fresh out of prison and on her door step. And guess what? Ava wants
her life back and she wants vengeance as well, and by any means necessary.
The drama Ava prepares to bring begins the minute she steps over Yancey's
threshold. She concocts an elaborate scheme to make sure Yancey is utterly
destroyed and she uses everything at her disposal, including the daughter
Yancey gave up years ago. The benefit of all this is for financial gain and
the star status she was accustomed too. Ava's antics will have you in awe and
questioning the lengths this mother would go to out do her own daughter. It'll
also make you look at your very own mother in a whole new light.
Harris delivers some big bang with this book. As is his usual style, he
presents an incredible story with some over-the-top drama and characters that
will make you shake your head for the downright audacity they possess. And
when I didn't think there was too much positive to gain from this story,
Yancey's transformation was a bit of a surprise. I enjoyed the story for its
entertainment value and the message I gleaned from its pages--if you have a
good mother, make sure you appreciate her for there are worst examples. Yes,
there are issues with MAMA DEAREST, such as hurried dialogue and few editing
mishaps, but overall, readers and lovers of E. Lynn Harris will enjoy the
story, as well as, the return of a few beloved characters.
