Book Reviews of Maniac Magee

Book Review: A modern tall tale -- with a message
Summary: 4 Stars

I've used Maniac Magee as the first shared book of the school year in my 5th grade classroom several times now, and it's always a hit. Its fast-paced plot, artful prose, and realistic settings never fail to interest the kids, and its moral about not judging others based on their race and/or appearance always hits home.

Many others have reviewed this book, so I won't go into a lot of detail about the plot. Suffice it to say, it's rare to find a "message" book that is not preachy, obvious, or boring. This excellent book succeeds in avoiding all those pitfalls. Highly recommended.

Book Review: A must read for old and young!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

The thing that I liked the most about this story is that it deals with many of the issues that young people are faced with in a way that is not offensive. I found myself cheering with tears in my eyes when Jeffery finally has a "family". This story is at the heart of what is really important for young people, a sense of belonging...being a part of something larger than yourself, and of course tolerance. What this story may have lacked in "reality" as some reveiwers stated, it more than made up for with the depiction of what a "family" truly is. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to others!

Book Review: A plain old story that ends regulary.
Summary: 1 Stars

I think Jerry uses strong words but I like his informal language. I think Maniac is a weird kid to tell you the truth. He is a nice kid but he does some stupid things like running away. Running away doesn't solve the problem. If I had to choose this book from 1-5 I would choose 0 but up their where you choose a star, I had to choose 1. Polpe think he is so AMAZING but he isn't, just a regular kid that ran away, made some enemies, had no home or family but got some friends and a home to stay with. This story is just a regular story like all authors do.I like his sayings like, "Don't trip over your tongue" something like that. They are funny and they go one with the story.

Book Review: A serious tale about racism wrapped up in innocence
Summary: 5 Stars

Maniac Magee is a truely sensational book. It follows Maniac Magee, a curious boy living on the streets invades Two Mills, a town that's racially segregated by a single street. He takes his home in many different places. He controversially lived with a black family in the black part of Two Mills. He lived with the white children, he lived in a barn. The extroidinairy thing about him is that he didn't just cross the line of racial segregation, he erased it. Be prepared for a truely amazing story.

Book Review: A wonderful Book!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is though-provoking and will keep you pondering it for hours. Maniac is a caracter that you can get attached to. You keep thinking "What if..." I recomend this only to anyone who can deal with more mature subjects, though.
