The sheer fatuousness of this notion - as if there were some identifiable and consistently held "interest" of a homogeneous elite - is exceeded only by the contempt that Chomsky and Herman here show for public opinion. The proposition that the people are so weak-minded that they are unable to choose the good for themselves without the enlightened judgement of the revolutionary to help them is the time-worn rationale of totalitarians throughout history. Chomsky's own record of agitation on behalf of totalitarian causes (his description of the anti-semitic "Holocaust denier" Robert Faurisson as "a sort of relatively apolitical liberal", and his comparison of the genocidal activities of the Cambodian Khmer Rouge to post-Liberation France) give evidence of the peculiarly tawdry political stance underlying this manifesto attacking liberty.
