Book Review: Creative and Interesting but much too Wordy
Summary: 3 Stars
Many Waters continues the Murry family saga. This book stars the twins, Dennys and Sandy, who stumble onto their father's experiment and find themselves in the time of Noah prior to the flood. The book is largely L'Engle's take on what the pre-flood world and human race was like. She attempts to interpret what many consider one of the mysterious episodes in the Bible that includes references to nephilim and sons of God.
The story is interesting as it is very imaginative. She includes angels and demons in the story. Noah and his family are main characters, as they face the conflicts of living in an evil time dominated by fallen angels. Sandy and Dennys are taller and larger than the people of the time but also have weaknesses that hamper them in this ancient age. They try to learn the ways of the time, as they also wonder if and how they will return home.
The story drags on and on without much action or suspense. Unlike the prior books in the series, L'Engle is very wordy and boring. The conclusion of the book is unsurprising and unclimactic. I think that this is a book that even fans of L'Engle might consider skipping or skimming through. For me, it was disappointing as a novel.
