Book Reviews of Margot Fonteyn: A LifeBook Review: Mysterious Margot! Summary: 4 Stars
The late wonderful Dame Margot Fonteyn was a far more complicated prima ballerina. She was the epitome of a ballet dancer. While this biography is rich and thick with details, I felt the writing could have been more clear at times. I felt the need to go back and clarify some information. At first, she was called Peggy because she was Margaret. While I understand the author's intentions, I wished that she had just referred to her as Margot from the beginning despite that she wasn't always Margot. I got confused at times.
Apart from some confusion, the book is rich in details and examines her personal and professional life. She was destined and worked hard to become a legendary dancer and even surpassed her imagination. She was truly a dancer but she was a mystery off and on the stage. She was dancing genius but difficult to figure out. She was complex and this book shows the complexities of her life including her love affairs and marriage.
Most dancers particularly prima ballerinas like Margot Fonteyn, Suzanne Farrell, and Zippora Karz tend to be childless, they have given their entire lives including their child-bearing years to the art of the ballet whether by choice or unconscious. To these ballerinas, dancing is everything including the pain and suffering that they endure and spend hours a day preparing for their performance. It's hard to believe that unlike actors and actresses, they only have to memorize and act out their lines while dancers like Fonteyn, Markova, Danilova, Pavlova, and others have to perfect that movement on stage. The life of a ballerina is not an easy one but Margot was determined to become one of the very best ballerinas in the world and she accomplished that because she's still remembered as the quintessential ballerina who ever graced the stage.
