Like other reviewers have reported here, this book is disappointing. Poor quality to the pictures.
Book Review: Disappointment Summary: 1 Stars
I was so disappointed with this book.I love, love, love the movie and was so excited to get this book and see all of the pictures. Unfortunately the pictures are all small and very grainy and have no fine detail at all. When you watch the movie you see all of these fantastic vibrant colors and there is nothing like that here. Plus the script is not complete and jumps around. I would suggest saving your money and doing what another reviewer said, which is go online and print the pictures yourself. You will get a much better selection and picture quality that way. [...].
Book Review: Good, but not wonderful Summary: 4 Stars
The book was bought as a gift. My mom loved the movie, especially the beautiful dresses, and I bought the book hoping for a lot of pictures she would be able to look at and gush over... (And I knew I could have the pleasure of borrowing it after she would have finished!)
First of all, I was very disappointed that the cover, which looked like some kind of blue satin in the pictures, was not. It's only a regular paper cover (hard cover, but paper!). It's quality, but not what I was hoping for.
There are pictures indeed, but not as many as I was hoping for, and it's mostly on-set pictures, in the sense that it's like the images you would get by freezing the screen watching the movie. Of course there are some exclusive pictures, but I was hoping for more, and detailed pictures, to see what I wasn't able to watching the movie, something more special...
The script excerpts are cool, but of course, since it's handwritten, it can be hard to read.
My mom was very happy to receive that book for mother's day, especially since she loved the look of the movie. But she had to admit she was a little disappointed overall after going through it.
Having said that, I cannot say that I regret my purchase. Only that it's not exactly up to par to what I expected and that maybe I would've liked to pay a little less for a product in that category of quality.
Book Review: Great for FANS! Summary: 4 Stars
I believe this book is meant to be bought by collectors and the people who LOVED Coppola's Marie Antoientte. It's not meant for people who want the 'poster pictures' of the movie or who are simply 'curious'. The pictures are beautiful, even though their quality is not the best one, but they will not interest or even impress you unless you are a fan. As a fan, i loved it, but if i had just wanted a book with the prettiest MA pictures, i don't think it'd have fulfilled my expectations.
One of the nicest things in this book is that you see parts of the script that didn't become actual scenes, or some dialogues there were cut in the final version.
For fans, i definitely recommend it. For the curious, only if you don't know what to do with the extra money.
Book Review: Great photographs, intense script. Summary: 5 Stars
Keeping in line with the previous books pertaining to Sofia Coppola films, I have to say the book for Marie Antoinette is now my favorite. It's perfectly in line with the tone and style of the film, and the pictures are really wonderful. There are probably more that could've gone in to the book (the publicity campaign for this film delivered thousands and thousands), but the knowledge that these photos were the ones expressly chosen by Sofia as accessories to her script (the core of this book) give it a very intimate, coffee table by way of scrapbook feel. The script itself is the highlight, and sheds light on the original intended ending for Coppola's film, quite a departure from the already dark ending of the film in its theatrical release. I think this is a perfectly lovely book, and although I don't quite gather why so many feel so negatively towards this publication (I think it might've been the initial price, or simply that they didn't expect the book to be what it actually is), I would recommend it. Not to anybody, but if you are a fan of either Sofia Coppola or her latest film, Marie Antoinette, this is a really nice treasure that makes my coffee table a lot more interesting now. These books generally don't stay in print very long, and this is a steal of a price; try finding the Lost In Translation book from three years ago! Five stars, no question.
