Book Reviews of Mars Needs Moms!Book Review: If your kids don't appreciate their mom, this book is for you! Summary: 5 Stars
I heard about this book on NPR. The author also pens "Bloom County" comics.
The art is wonderful, and the story quickly gets to the point. It is a good story to share with children who may not fully appreciate how much their moms do for them. I left it laying around on the coffee table so the kids could pick it up and read it without prodding. We are still working on the appreciation part, but they definitely got the point.
Book Review: Kid's Sci-Fi Tribute Summary: 5 Stars
This book, for people of all ages, and if you had a mom like mine, makes you hope you give, gave, are giving your Mom enough respect for the love and care and sacrifice she has put out for her children. Breathed's seriously funny Opus series is sort of turned on its head with surprise seriousness. Excently drawn and colored, beautiful design and surprise kids Science Fiction, the book may create a new genre. You want to share it with the people you know. High recommendation all around.
Book Review: Loved the book! Summary: 5 Stars
Asolutely awesome pictures and a great story too. Very touching and told with a sense of humor. Becausr of the way it is written, this book could appeal to all ages.
Book Review: Moms appreciated even on Mars Summary: 4 Stars
What's so great about mothers? They just make you eat food that you don't want and enforce hard work. They even send you to your room without dinner, those humorless tyrants. Who need them?
Apparently Martians. They don't have moms, after all. So when they land and swipe his mom, Milo doesn't stop to wonder why he's chasing them, he just does. And on this extraordinary adventure, he also figures out what makes moms so special.
With candy-colored, vivid illustrations, Mars Needs Moms! will have all kids pouring over the pages. It is a fun, if not a little clunky, read-aloud full of alliteration and subtlety. Breathed uses extensive vocabulary (as recommended in The Read-Aloud Handbook (Trelease) to build the listening vocabulary of young readers) that might bring a few complaints from some, but it doesn't detract from the story. If anything it adds. This story also has the additional benefit of pointing out what self-sacrificing people mothers really are...without making it overly obvious to the kids.
And I just have to comment on the genius of the illustrations. My favorite is of the Martians who are trying to lure an unsuspecting mother with a Starbucks latte. The mom just stands and stares, desperately wanting the caffeine fix, but with groceries on both hips, a purse and a shopping bag in her hands, and a baby strapped onto her chest, she couldn't possibly stoop to pick it up. Perfect!
Armchair Interviews says: Nice complementary words and illustrations to make a fun book.
Book Review: Moms are the BEST! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for my four year old, we have nightly reading time and my wife read it to her the first time; it brought a tear to her eye and that choked up sound to her voice. I love the art work. The story, told from a childs point of view is very funny and insightful. A gentle reminder to us all about the sacrifices that our mothers make and how hard it can be to be a kid. This is a timeless keepsake and a joy to read over and over again.
