Book Reviews of Mars Needs Moms!Book Review: Ultimate Sacrifice Summary: 5 Stars
Berk Breathed homes in on the bare essence of being a mother: the unequivocal and extraordinary willingness to die for another human being -- her child. In the real world, though this is not usually tested in the strictest sense, it is proven in many derivative ways. Moms may be only human, and have many flaws, but they are all willing to take a bullet for their children, and show this by sacrificing in myriad and fundamental ways that may not be entirely obvious to us growing up. This amazing and beautiful truth is distilled in Breathed's funny and poignant book, in the form of a parable-fantasy whose power will move the hardest reader to tears -- followed by a hug or a phone call (depending on one's proximity to one's mom).
Book Review: WOW! Breathed packs an emotional wallop! Summary: 5 Stars
I don't usually add my two cents to an item that already has so many reviews but the content of this book has compelled me to do so anyway.
I was perusing amazon looking at space themed books for my son and the artwork on this one caught my eye. I checked it out from the library to see if it was worth purchasing. My 7 year old daughter pulled this one out of the stack of library books and read it straightaway. I noticed that she read the book over and over, so I sat down to read the book myself. I was pleasantly (in a teary eyed, quivering lip kind of way) ambushed by the message of this picture book. Who knew a picture book could have such deep meaning. Breathed conveys that meaning with his words but more so with his stunning artwork. Talk about a picture being worth a thousand words! I won't spoil the climax of the story but will say that this book would be a great gift to any mom, especially from a child (hint, hint dads). I was going to order numerous copies for Christmas for my mommy friends but it is out of stock. But there is always Mother's Day!!
I asked my daughter why she thought this book was so good and this is her review:
My favorite part of the book is when Milo figures out what is so special about mothers and I think the pictures are wonderful.
Book Review: Warning -- Tearjerker Summary: 5 Stars
A friend of mine received this book on Mother's Day. Her daughter had glued pages in the front submitted by every child and grandchild she had, with drawings, photos, and testimonials of what she meant to them. I was crying even before I read the book. When I actually got to the book itself, the tears turned to sobbing, but GOOD sobs, if you know what I mean.
Don't get me wrong -- it's not sappy, just a plain and simple realization of what moms are to kids. I LOVED IT!!
Book Review: We adore this book! Summary: 5 Stars
Berkely Breathed at his best - this book has a plot which has both the fantasy that a kid likes plus the message that an adult likes - in this case, it celebrates moms. We are liking this book even more than Breathed's Edwurd Fudwupper story, but it is a close call as to which is best. The illustrations are incredible, as always.
This has become my new "birthday present" book.
Book Review: Wonderful Story, Fabulous Illustrations! Summary: 5 Stars
Here's the truth: I bought the book for my granddaughter, and wound up keeping it for myself. Heck, she's only four and doesn't really get the story. She is facinated by the illustrations. The first time I read it to her, her parents and grandfather were as engaged with the story as she was. I even used this book to present an interpretive reading project for Toastmasters. I wasn't sure how it was received, but was amazing! Both parents and kids can relate to this story. It starts off quite humorously, then takes an unexpected emotional turn. I highly recommend it for readers (and those who appreciate great artwork) of all ages.
