Book Reviews of Marvel Masterworks: The X-Men Vol. 6 (Hardcover)

Book Review: The end of the original X-Men era
Summary: 5 Stars

Having bought Essential X-Men 1&2 and a whole bunch of the Essential New X-men books it was quite disappointing that the last 13 issues of the original series were not included in those re-prints. With that in mind I bought this hardback, full colour book that contains X-Men 54-66.
Starting with the introduction of Alex Summers, Scott's brother who is kidnapped by the Living Pharaoh. The Pharaoh knows Alex is also a mutant and is after draining his power. The Pharaoh becomes the Living Monolith and Alex eventually becomes Havok.
The beauty of this book is the way Roy Thomas scripts these tales so they flow easily into each other, as well as the first Neal Adams work for Marvel.
Alex becomes Havok and Lorna Dane returns as do the Sentinels led by Larry Trask the son of their creator, with a nice twist at the end as Trask also turns out to be a mutant and his mutant destroying robots turn against him. Watch out for a rogues gallery of X-Men villains in the Sentinels collection.
Alex is taken to see Dr. Lykos to help him cope with his powers but Lykos turns out to be the human-pteranodon hybrid energy sucking Sauron who faces off with the X-Men for a couple of issues before apparently falling to his death in the coldest depths of Tierra del Fuego.
Where Sauron falls the Angel follows and is attacked by a group of Pteranodons and falls through into the Savage Land to be rescued by the Creator. The other X-Men follow and with Ka-zar and Zabu they attack the Creator's new biologically created mutant allies including Lorelei. The Creator is eventually revealed as Magneto and after being defeated he goes off to lick his wounds.
There's a brilliant stand alone tale involving Sunfire a Japanese mutant born from the ashes of Hiroshima. Then to ensure everyone is confused we see the return of Professor X who reveals that the person killed by Grotesk was in fact the Changeling. Confused, you soon will be as he helps the X-Men defeat the warlike X'Nox with the help of concentrated goodwill from across the globe but collapses due to the strain.
Phew, then to quieten things down the Hulk appears as the X-Men go in search of Bruce Banner who has developed a machine to bring the Professor back to health.
The Roy Thomas introduction is very interesting especially in light of the fact that the X-Men was declining in sales at this time. For those of us who were just starting to buy American comics at this time I remember catching up with the reprints of the later X-Men tales that started in the 1970's that led to the creation of the modern X-Men and getting many of these tales from the comic bookshops that seemed to be everywhere in the 1970's.
It's a shame that the Essentials series missed out these tales and it is also odd when you look at how the new X-Men tales are gathered together repeating some stories from the Annuals probably due to a hurried attempt to cash in on the X-men movie phenomenon, and strangely missing X-Men Annual # 2.
As a nostalgic it was great to see these tales in colour again but it would be way too expensive to get all my old favourites by purchasing the Masterworks series. That's why the Essentials are just that to me, the Masterworks books are the icing.
