Jack Kirby is possibly the most important name in super-hero comic books. Okay, Siegel and Shuster and Kane were there first and Moore probably did it best with Watchmen, but Kirby stamped an indelible mark on the two top companies in the field, adding some of the most enduring and imaginative elements in Marvel and DC's mythologies. I remember as a kid being unimpressed by the boxy style of his art, but now older, wiser, more sophisticated, I see just how brilliant the man's layouts and design sense truly was.This beautifully presented hardback collection features highlights from Kirby's Marvel work and hammers home how truly sad it is that Kirby was poorly served by the company and forced to leave his best creations behind. The collection includes the legendary Galactus storyline from Fantastic Four, as well as a What If featuring the Marvel Bullpen and some classic strips from the 40's all presented in touched up colour.
If you like superhero comics at all, you should buy this book. It is a perfect primer on the history of the field as it was in the 40's to the 70's, lacking the hokiness of other offerings. If you love superhero comics, you have to buy this book. There was a reason Kirby was called the King and this collection shows it perfectly.
