Book Review: 'Mary, Mary'...good and scary!
Summary: 4 Stars
Like other reviewers, I was also seriously disappointed with 'London Bridges', which just never seemed like a 'real' Alex Cross novel. I don't know if Patterson had an uncredited collaborator on that book, but with 'Mary, Mary', it appears he's gone back to doing the kind of police work Alex Cross does best. The premise of 'Hollywood murders' is intriguing, the 'motherhood' angle that crops up with each victim is a good 'hook', and the 'personal stuff' that some don't seem to like is very much in evidence here. Personally, I like the touches that Alex's family adds to the cast, and while there is a brief detour into 'child custody' stuff, it's only incidental to the book(though important to later books in the series, assuming Patterson continues it).
My only real gripe is that Cross seems out of place with the FBI, especially since he usually ends up working with Sampson and other former police colleagues anyway. Sampson adds a lot to the series, and fans will enjoy his appearance in this book. I hope it's a sign of things to come for Alex Cross.
