Book Reviews of Mass Effect: AscensionBook Review: Not big enough Summary: 4 Stars
Drew Karpyshyn can always be counted on to deliver a great read; unfortunately, with this book he is given a very rigid storyline. This amounts to very limited action and a very small scope for a story that should be epic. The book takes place in about 3 locations and it isn't very action packed. Drew can still tell a compelling story although I get the feel this book is used mainly to plug Mass Effect 2 instead of really expanding on the universe. It is a good read for those interested in the game, but I wouldn't recommend it for someone who wants true sci-fi escapism. I would recommend any Darth Bane book if you want to appreciate how good of a writer Drew Karpyshyn is. I just wish this story could have been bigger.
Book Review: Not only for gamers Summary: 4 Stars
With the success of the computer game a book tie-in is not surprising, what was surprising is that the this book is actually a decent read. It is an interesting mix of sci-fi, adventure and crime genres with even a militaristic touch. It can be a bit hard to follow at first due to the letter anagrams but as I got deeper into the novel I wanted to know what was at the bottom of all this...
Not all is revealed in this book so I am assuming there will be more books to follow? One disclaimer, I am a gamer but I also read a lot and I don't think you have to be a gamer to enjoy this novel.
Book Review: OK book, but something is missing Summary: 3 Stars
I reviewed ME's first book, "Revelation" (which I think was a great book), and wanted badly to say something better about this book. Don't take me wrong. It's not bad. Mr. Karpyshyn's writing is always god, always flows well. But the main problem with this book is that, somehow, this story doesn't feel like it deserves a book!
The main plot does not feel worthy of much. The author creates good characters, and makes it better because of them. But in the end, the story itself is not that good. At least not grand enough for this kind of reading, and the ME universe. It feels like an excuse to connect dots withing the games.
Overall, the writing is as good as in all his books, but there's not enough "meat" in this book. It's a little too forgettable. It's not a big book, and it's light reading. But still feels like it could have been told in fewer pages. Which is an odd feeling for such a small book.
Book Review: OK, but not on par with Revelation or other TOR books. Summary: 3 Stars
Mass Effect: Ascension
Let me preface this by saying that I read revelation, and played parts of the videogame on Xbox360. I was very drawn into the first book, and rushed out to play the game. I wasn't that into the game, and gave up after a few chapters/worlds.
This book, Ascension, was a decent book, but it didn't follow any recognizable story line established by the first book, or what I'd seen in the game. That aside, the book just didn't seem to flow very well. It started off very slow and hard to get into, but quickly picked up into one of the "I can't put this down it's so good!" books, but dropped from that terrace approx. 1/2 through the book, and never got that feeling again until the last few pages.
Overall, I'm left more confused about the Mass Effect story arcs than I was before hand.
Book Review: OK, the first one was better, doesn't add much... Summary: 2 Stars
I was looking for a nice filler between Mass Effect the game and Mass Effect 2. In the first book, you are introduced to the villain and a mystery. The action was non stop and you couldn't wait for the game to come.
This second book fails to deliver on many scales. I really couldn't feel for the characters. I felt this book was made only to fill in details about the Quarians, because in game 1 we knew so little about them. I just thought more could have been done, and the story wasn't that enjoyable. I will definitely buy the second game because I am a huge ME fan, which is why I was disappointed with this book.
If you are ME fan, you may want to read this book.
