Book Review: A "must buy" Acsessory for D300

If you have a D300, this book will perhaps be your most important accesory. The Nikon D300 manual, though very elaborate, is not really a pleasure to read. "Mastering the Nikon D300" by Darrel Young is a very well researched book and it is fully cross referenced with the Nikon Manual. Weather you are an amateur or a professional photographer this book will help you to get the maximum out of four excellent investment in D300.
To start with the book is in an interesting two column, full color format with actual screen shots of all the menu settings. The writing style of the author is extremely clear with an abundance of lucid examples. I had been trying to understand the use of Histogram from various sources but in 8 pages on histogram in this book, I could get so much clarity that now I wonder how I managed without histograms for so long. The chapter on Multi-cam 3500DX makes the complicated process of auto focus very clear. We get to know which servo mode and which AF Area mode to use under different conditions. The 9, 21 and 51 point AF have been adequately covered and after reading this I never have any doubt as to which AF mode to use and when. For the first time I really came to know the difference between 51 pt and 51 pt 3D tracking mode. Similarly the chapters on white balance, and metering , exposure modes and histograms are very well written. Each chapter ends with Darrells conclusions which sums up very appropriately the authors views and his experience on topic covered in the chapter.
The chapters on setting the menu banks are really very well written with clear explaination on which settings to use and why. After going through these chapters Menu bank setting is a breeze. You feel really empowered and in full control of your very versetile camera.
A full chapter has been devoted to Nikon Creative Lighting System. Before reading this I used to face a lot of problem bringing my SB800 to remote mode and to bring it back ot normal mode (Master/Remote OFF). Using the Speedlight in commander mode and the "--" (double dash!) function of the built in flash are very well explained with screen shoot of the camera and speedlight control panels. Setting groups and channels in external speedlight is well explained.
Some may be wondering which reference book will be the most suited for their use. Well I have almost all the material on D300 (Digital field guide by Dennis Thomas, E-book by Thom, Magic lantern guide and David Busch's book.) If you are looking for a truely dedicated book on D300 which you can keep in your camera bag, then this is the book for you. Thom's guide is also exceptional but it is in e book format and even if you get it printed you can't really carry it around. Some have commented on the small font size used in the book. Well the font size is not all that small. This is surely a trade off to make the book compact and camera bag friendly.
