Book Reviews of Max The Mighty

Book Review: Max the Mighty Strikes a Punch
Summary: 4 Stars

In this book, the sequel to the book Freak the Mighty is about Max, the main character from the first book, finding a young girl named Rachel, also known as Worm, and finding out that she is being abused by her step father and her mother won't take a stand against the stepfather. Max is given a book by Worm and upon giving it back, he takes Rachel because she is being slapped and is told by her mother to take her away from him. Soon Max is on the run as he is convicted for kidnapping Worm. The step father fools everyone by acting like he never did anything to her and that she loved her and her mother was forced to back him up by him. Now Max is on the run to find Worm's father who is supposedly in Montana while avoiding traitors.

I thought that this book was excellent and had a lot of description and drew me in. There is a twist at the end that made my heart jump. I think this didn't have as much heart as Freak the Mighty but was overall a wonderful book. 4 Stars.

Book Review: Max the Mighty- Great read aloud for reluctant readers
Summary: 5 Stars

I used this book as a read-aloud for my 8th Graders. After reading Freak the Mighty and seeing the film, Max the Mighty was an instant hit. I had several students who HAD NEVER READ AN ENTIRE BOOK BEFORE (no kidding) check this out from the school and local libraries and excitedly reported to me each day about the fascinatingly weird events revolving around Max, Worm, Hippy Dippy and the Undertaker. I have found this book to be a powerful motivator in the classroom and after my 33years of trying to interest kids in reading, Max the Mighty and Freak the Mighty have helped significantly. In a world of electronic toys and games that trump so many other activities, including reading, these books still are ranked highly among middle school-age kids and the teachers who chose to promote reading.

Book Review: Max the mighty
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is one my favorites! The first thing that happens is max just walking the street meets a bully picking on a girl. So max saved the girl called worm. Then they went on an adventure to Montana in order to run away from her abusive stepfather. They were running from the police all the way to Montana (where her father is). But then they could not find worm father, so they looked in an old dangerous mine where her real father is. But then the police find them and they run into the mine and keep running until they see some bright light. Could it be outside or miners lights? Or maybe the police blocking the exit? Read the book to find out. Like I said this book is one of my favorites!

Book Review: Max the mighty!!!!! Great Book!
Summary: 5 Stars

Max the Mighty
Max the Mighty is about a kid named Max. Max saves worm from her evil stepfather who abuses her mother. After Max saves Worm they run away. During this journey the meet a lot of people and go through many obstacles. In the end Worm finally finds out her real father is dead. Also her stepfather is thrown in jail and she lives with her real mother and Max's grandparents invite them to stay with them.
In this story there are a lot of characters. The main characters are Max and worm. Minor characters are Dippy Hippie, Hobo Joe, Grim and Gram, the Undertaker, and Worm's mother. Max is extremely big, he is bigger than most adults. Even though he might look big and spooky he is actually harmless. Worm is very petite and loves to read. She also has red hair and a miner's helmet that is very special to her, because it was from her real dad that is now dead.
I thought this was a great book. It made me want to read and not to stop when it was time. It was an exciting story and a great sequel to Freak the Mighty. I hope there is another book to go along with these and I strongly encourage everyone to read it.

Book Review: Micah's Review
Summary: 4 Stars

In the book Max the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick there is lots of adventure. I think that people who like adventure and friendship should read this book. There is a kid named Max and he meets a girl named Rachel. They call Rachel Worm because she reads so much. Rachel has a very abusive stepfather (they call him the Undertaker) who beats her and her mother. Max meets Rachel when he helps her get away from a bully. Max is this huge kid that is in 8th grade about six feet tall. His dad is in jail and his mother is dead. Together Rachel and Max go on an adventure. On their adventure they meet a guy named Dippy Hippie. He was helping Max and Rachel get away from the cops which causes a lot of action. The two characters Frank and Joanie betray Worm and Max.

Most of the reason they go on the adventure is the Undertaker calls the cops so he can blame the things he did to his wife and Worm on Max. During this book their adventure is amazing. They meet a man that drives them very far so she can get to Chivalry, Montana. The reason they are going to Montana is to see her dad. When they get there they see her dad but not in the way you think. The hard part of it is just getting there.

I think you should read the book Max the Mighty because you can actually think that you're on their adventure. Also the have a lot of problems with the police chases an them hiding from the police. Right in the beginning of the book there is police at Max's house.

This book is one of my favorite because of the characters. I also liked how the author gave so much detail and expression through out the whole book. One example of this is when he is describing a van that Max and Rachel thought was a dragon. "Worm goes the dragon! He's coming back! The ground starts shaking under my feet and the wind is coming faster and I can hear this low kind of growl, like a giant monster has really entered the tunnel, and we're in the way of where it wants to go." You will find many good passages to enjoy when you read this book.
