Book Reviews of Me & Emma

Book Review: A Book Like No Other
Summary: 5 Stars

Me and Emma by Elizabeth Flock is an engrossing, resonating, bittersweet book. It is told from the naïve perspective of Caroline (Carrie) Parker. Carrie is suffering. She tries to escape in fairy tales and make believe, but she can't. Ever since the death of her father, everything has gone downhill. Her absent mother married an abusive drunk, and now they are forced to leave their town of Toast, North Carolina. Carrie decides to run away from her family to protect her feisty six-year-old sister Emma, but they end up right where they started, and are forced to leave a town full of memories. Carrie meets new people that immediately love her and try to protect her, but she eventually learns of an unspoken truth that has tainted and destroyed her family ever since the death of her father.
Me and Emma is a thought provoking, amazing book that tells of broken families, an unbreakable bond, and the anticipated loss of innocence. Carrie has a naïve, straightforward voice, but soon must gather up courage to do what no other eight year old has done. Precocious Carrie is undeniably sweet and cares for her sister over herself, but Emma gets Carrie into the most horrific experience of her life. The psychological book is torn between the past and the present, is fluently written in prose nonetheless, and keeps you turning the pages. It touches a topic that no other book has dared gone near. The shocking, mind-boggling conclusion moves you and keeps you reeling, and up for half the night. You will want to read it again and again.
