Book Review: A must-read thrill ride
Summary: 5 Stars
This may be my favorite book by Bill Clem yet. Without giving away too much, this superbly written book has plot twists you don't see coming, with tragedy standing next to triumph, confusion giving way to chilling clarity. I especially like the seamless way he uses dual eras and locations, with the story unfolding in the 1930's as well as present day, in pastoral New England and deep in the Amazon jungle, each with it's own deadly dangers. The story is tack-sharp, rooted in scientific possibilities, debate about the value of life, and real jungle legend; it's often hard to discern what is fact and what is fiction. The comparison to Dorian Gray is apt, but the real story is rooted in man's neverending quest to conquer death, and makes one wonder if the ends justify the means. With well-written villians and heroes of varying stripe and color, each characters motivations are easily identifiable and relatable. The villians, who don't see themselves as such, as well as the reluctant heroes' trepidation make it seem all too real. A lean tight thriller, there is lots of action, but no superflous fat in this novel. To boil it down to one sentence: Read this book, it's one for the ages (pun intended!).
