Book Review: Short on Explanation, Teachers may find useful

This dense book presents a dizzying amount of very useful information in the form of exercises. Unfortunately, the author seems to have written the book with the intention of taking each reader on as a student with whom he can elaborate on each presented concept (he actually mentions this about one minute into the CD). So, right off the bat, we are looking at a book/CD that is not meant to be used solely by a student.
The accompanying CD is similarly disappointing; aside from the stiff recitation of lines at the outset of the recording, it is filled with what sounds like unrehearsed banter. The disc only covers material presented in the first sixteen of 55 pages. Instead of clean examples of exercises, we are treated to numerous false starts, interjections, and elaborations. One wonderes why Dahl or his editor didn't come to the conclusion that, if the lessons required such extensive explanations, those were not simply included in the text. In an age of overdubs and digital recording, this is not acceptable.
Given the wealth of knowledge Dahl obviously has to offer, and his interest in raising the average student's musical understanding, the book/CD combination is is a disappointment. With a modicum of effort, he could have offered a much more instructional book by adding brief text explanations and a less wordy recording composed of clean audio examples of lessons presented in the book.
A student on his/her own will probably find it difficult to use. However, teachers who are familiar enough with the material could make use of the book as a supplement to lessons.
