Book Review: The Wafer Thin Book!!!

I recently purchased this book hoping to get my teeth stuck into some tasty technical blues/country/rock guitar techniques. However it proved to be extremely disappointing. Firstly I was amazed that it only contains 16 pages in total - 6 of which include the index, notation legend, photos etc. I then discovered that there were indeed no `tricks' to speak of, as the title would lead you to believe. You basically get a handful (or should that be a teaspoon full) of bog standard easy/intermediate blues licks which wouldn't really stretch the ability of any fairly competent guitarist. The book reaches its crescendo (yes I'm being sarcastic) on the final page, where for some bizarre reason he has decided to include a completely out of context naff tapping exercise.
If you're an intermediate/advanced guitarist do not buy this book, you will find nothing to challenge you. If however you are a beginner - still don't buy it, there are far better publications out there for the same price and 10 times the amount of pages.
I feel that the publishers are ripping people off. They should ensure that books are not printed with such little content. The fact that there is a `volume 2' in this series is particularly offensive. It is quite clear that both of these books should have been combined as a single publication. This is further evidence of the publishers' greed, effectively trying to get the customer to purchase an additional pamphlet - oopps! I meant book.
In his defence, Johnny Hiland is a great guitar player - as the opening guitar track on the audio CD reveals (although this track has very little relevance to the content featured in the book, which is unfortunate) his explanations of the exercises are also clearly described. As for 'Licks & Tricks' I think he wanted to keep them for himself on this occasion.
