I have trained with weights for most of my adult life and kept myself in decent shape IMHO :-)

I recently began using MIKE MENTZERS HIT Training system, the original, not one copied by others. I work out once every 5/7 days doing a whole body workout which lasts roughly 20 minutes using compound exercises.

In 5 workouts I added 50kg to my leg press and 25kg to close grip pulldowns, all other weights etc have increased each workout and I've gained over 8lbs of muscle.

MY POINT?
If you're going to train right for results then surely eating right is a must too!?

Mike Mentzer's HIT training is unconventional but scientific and successful, this book is the same. A low carb diet is not popular among some but here is a paragraph from the book that turned a light on for me:

" Just as we have fat stores we have sugar stores. However, unlike fat stores, which are able to expand, your glycogen tank has limited capacity to store sugar...a full glycogen tank signals your body to using incoming carbs for energy INSTEAD of your stored fat...

Because most peoples diets are excessively high in carbs, their glycogen levels are always at peak capacity. In turn their bodies will not allow them to use their stored fat for energy. Excess carbs cause an overflow of blood sugar; the result? chronically high blood sugar...

When your glycogen stores are full the overflow of sugar goes to your liver where it's converted to blood fat known as tryglycerides."

BOTTOM LINE?

A HIGH CARB diet not only maintains the fat you have but adds to it from the unused carbs which become tryglyceride fats.

A LOW CARB diet, the body reverts to using fats for fuel and your blood sugar has no problems and your pancreas isn't overworked releasing insulin.

You may think this is like the ATKINS DIET and in some ways it is but this has been refined specifically to lose fat whilst keeping/increasing muscle mass.
