Bill Brown has given us the essence of a modern musical genius. His book will bring joy and wisdom to all musicians, not just pianists, now and in the future. The first part of the book develops the story of Mr. Pressler's performing career as soloist and chamber musician. It's a hair-raising tale of unique talent, some luck,and a lot of work. In the second part of the book, Dr. Brown takes us into Mr.Pressler's studio for an intimate portrait of the great musician and how he shares his artistry. There are anecdotes aplenty , and a brief statement by Mr Pressler about the composers whose works are illustrated in the book. When you read these, it is as if you are back in the studio, listening to the master as he unfolds the mysteries of a Debussy prelude, or a Brahms sonata, indeed the whole musical web of whatever composer he is seeking to share. Quietly (usually), with warmth and humor, the student is held spellbound as Pressler talks and demonstrates,his thoughts coming from a lifetime of absolute devotion to the music and its demands.The book is invaluable on so many levels, including the fact that it's one more thing for his students to be proud of.
