Book Reviews of Mere ChristianityBook Review: A Great Book Summary: 5 Stars
This book breaks Christianity down into easy to understand terms. I wish someone had put it into my hands as a teen or twenty-something. Lewis is such a deep thinker that it took getting through the first two chapters before I began to grip what he was saying. Since reading it, I have given away several copies to seeking friends. It is a favorite.
Book Review: A Great Simplistic View of A Complex Subject Summary: 5 Stars
After reading several books on a similar topic that did nothing but confuse me, I was glad that I came upon C.S. Lewis's work. All of the other books about the existence of God are way off in their own world, and discourage anyone who feels lost in their ideas about God. This book really explained the reasons that God must exist, and then moved on to easily describe the major beliefs of Christians, without leaving anyone out in the cold on what the key issues actually are. This book is perfect for the agnostic, the atheist, and even the Christian that wants to know the logical and simple reasons that C.S. Lewis came to be a Christian. Over and over, his words made me see even the simplest concepts of religion in a completely new light. I was greatly impressed and have already read this book multiple times.
Book Review: A Layman's explanation of Christianity Summary: 5 Stars
C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity is a great work about faith. Many intellectuals may scoff in contempt about some of the logic that Lewis uses, but in some ways that is the entire point of this book. He gives a concise and easily understandable description of what faith means. Keep in mind that this book is comprised of essays, many of which were born out of a radio program during World War 2.
While Mere Christianity is a great read it should not be taken as the gospel truth. C.S. Lewis was a brilliant individual, but some of his beliefs about women in a religious perspective are outdated. He would be the first to tell you that he was nothing more than a layman when it comes to explaining the Kingdom of God. Qualms aside, this is a really great book and it is easy to read. Those that like Mere Christianity should read Lewis' The Screwtape Letters.
Book Review: A Mandatory reading for all Christians Summary: 5 Stars
As a professor of apologetics and theology, I have made this book mandatory reading. It is my firm belief that EVERY Christian MUST read this book! I won't offer an apologia of Lewis' work here in this review; however, I do challenge you to read and find out for yourself what a wonderful work this is. If you are one of those who have always said to yourself, "I need to read that book sometime", then let today be the day that you start! Christians beware though! This book will knock you down and challenge you. It is the definitive work when it comes to apologetics and Christian philosophy. You will have to read this over and over many times BUT it will be worth it and God will be honored as a result by your strengthened faith.
I also recommend: Intellectuals Don't Need God and Other Modern Myths
by Alister E. McGrath. This work is an excellent companion to Mere Christianity.
Book Review: A Must Read Summary: 5 Stars
C.S. Lewis would be a person I wouldn't want to debate. The way he thinks things through and articulates them in this book are very impressive. He does it in such a way as to make you think "Why didn't I think of that? It was so simple".
If you are not wowed by reading this book, then I would say you don't know how to read.
