Book Review: A Conclusion Long In Coming... And Just Plain Long

Many years ago - more than I'd care to remember, truth be told - I was spellbound by the first two books in this trilogy (Wideacre and The Favored Child, respectively). At the time, I searched high and low, but could not find, the concluding chapter of the series. I went on to read and fall in love with another book by the same author - The Wise Woman - but my search for Meridon proved elusive.
Until recently, that is.
With the reprinting of the trilogy, I anxiously rushed out and picked up Meridon, worried that I might have difficulty picking up the saga, as my memory is... well, not good, to say the least.
Without hesitation, I dove into Meridon... and quickly found myself mired in a story which had it's interesting moments, but spent far too long on the road with circus folks and not nearly enough time at the beloved estate around which the previous two books had centered.
Anyone wondering how this book would fare as a stand-alone read, were it to be picked up without having read Wideacre and The Favored Child, need not fear. I believe it works perfectly well on its own. I doubt, however, that anyone reading the conclusion of the saga would feel compelled to rush out and purchase the first two books. Which is sad, considering how excited I was to get to the third book based on what had come before.
None of this is to say that the book is not worth reading, especially for those looking for a sense of closure to the series. However, compared to the author's previous work in the series, this book can only be considered something of a let-down.
