Book Reviews of Middlesex: A Novel

Book Review: A complete waste of time
Summary: 1 Stars

The only interesting thing about this book is the praise it received. The writing is tedious and the characters are annoyingly predictable. I have 6 pages left and I could care less if I finish it. Regrets? That I paid full price and wasted precious time being seduced by jacket praise and awards mention. If you must see for yourself, borrow a copy.

Book Review: A delicious read
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is a truly delightful voyage; historically, geographically, genetically, psychologically, sexually and "humanly". The metaphors, including the baggage of immigrants, which in this case is symbolized by a mutation, are masterfully woven into the fabric of the book. What a fun read from an author who makes it seem so easy but whose mastery of the writing craft is superb. I couldn't put this brilliant book down and highly recommend it.

Book Review: A delightful read
Summary: 5 Stars

Middlesex is an excellent book. It talks to the complexity of our feelings and desires. It brilliantly paints characters that we love. My favorite is Desdemona. The book's historical context (Greece and the USA) between the turn of the centuries 20 and 21) is rich and informative. A book that is comic and tragic. I highly recommend it.

Book Review: A fantastic novel
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a fantastic novel by Jeffrey Eugenides. The physical and mental struggle of Calliope is perfectly depicted. Although it is a story, it is very close to real life. It could happen to any family. As i went through the book , I had a feeling that Cal was sitting in front of me and relating her life story. Seeing oneself as a girl till teenage and then preparing oneself mentally and physically as a man, is truly a painful experience and Eugenides has been successful in making the readers feel the pain and experience the struggle of Cal, through his writings and usage of heart touching dialouges.

Book Review: A fascinating read
Summary: 5 Stars

I thought MiddleSex was a fascinating read. I enjoyed the journey through history Eugenides takes the reader on. From the incetuous relationship with Cal's grandparents to the ending of Cal's fate as a hermaphrodite. I also enjoyed all of the details that were included throughout history such as, the burning of Greece, his grandparents journey to America, and his parents witnessing the race riots in Detriot. It was all so accurate and humorous to read from the perspective of a Greek family and young Callie.

I highly recommend this book, I couldn't put it down.
