Book Review: An insightful and eloquent treatment of Miles Davis

Ian Carr's MILES DAVIS is the most in-depth assessment of Miles since his death in 1991, and a studied treatment of his later years has been long overdue. It is well researched, drawing from numerous sources close to Miles, as well as from Carr's own musical knowledge. As an added bonus, Ian Carr is a skillful and literate writer. If you're looking for a celebrity biography, Miles' own book written with Quincy Troupe comes closer. Carr's focus is very much on Miles the artist, with considered and eloquent reviews of Miles' major works. If there is one fault from my point of view, it is that the first half of the book is inconsistently edited for this update of Carr's 1982 biography. This is a small complaint, though. Overall, the transition from the old material to the new is seamless, and Carr makes a strong case for the power of Miles' later work. As with Miles Davis' music, Miles Davis biographies are likely to elicit widely varying reactions. However, one needn't agree with the opinions in order to appreciate the professionalism and insight that went into the reviews. And as with the music, so it is with well informed and well presented writings about the man-more Miles is always better than less Miles. Ian Carr's new volume is a welcome addition.
