Book Review: Sound warning but not for the cursory reader
Summary: 4 Stars
Pipe's is unfairly maligned in the mainstream media as a racist. Anyone who reads this book will find that his lucid explanation contains great respect for Muslims and the religion of Islam. He does not, however, hold any punches when dealing with militant Islam and the threat it poses to the civilized world. The reader might be surprised to learn that Pipe's disagrees with Sam Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations" argument. Instead he aligns himself with the notion that the Muslim world is engaged in a great civil war. Or, as Saudi Ambassador Faisal al-Turki once noted, a war "for civilization."
This book deftly underscores the insidious nature of militant Islam, especially at home in the US, but should not be approached by the basic reader of the Middle East. One who has not been exposed to important regional historical facts, political trends, and religious dogma will walk away with a skewed if not imcomplete understanding. Pipe's book is fantastic within the context of other reading on the issue, but should not be approached alone.
Aside from this issue, his book unwravels in a somewhat confusin manner. A certain logical progression is lacking and some chapters feel like magazine articles that appear without justification. Also, Pipe's contradicts himself at some points and seems uncertain of his conclusion. He performs an excellent service in underscoring the threat without providing concrete steps to remidy it. For instance, he readily admits the deep schism between Sunni and Shi'a Islam but then tries to present the militant branches of both as a common front. This reminds one of the weak argument the Bush administration uses to connect al-Qaeda with Saddam Hussein or Iran to al-Qaeda. In the shady criminal underworld of international terrorism, everyone shares points of connection: its doesn't make them allies.
Also, Pipes belittles moderate Muslims in certain passages and then inflates their importance in others.
In sum, he gets an "A" for presenting the target and conveying the threat, but receives a "C" for giving policy prescriptions beyond simple counter-terrorism. All in all I give this book 4 stars becauses Pipes has the balls to say what most people don't want to hear and won't apologize for it.
