Miracle Cure by Michael Palmer is a taut medical thriller about Dr. Brian Holbrook, who has been hired by Boston Heart Institute to join a medical team testing a new miracle drug for cardiac patients. Holbrook desperately needs the job as his medical license was suspended due to drug abuse after he sustained a knee injury playing football. At first Holbrook is excited about the potential for the new drug, so excited that he violates protocol to administer the drug to his father, who is dying of heart disease. But then he starts to notice a disturbing pattern in the deaths of patients who were administered the drug during Phase 1 of the trial.
In Palmer's books, the medical aspect always comes first, the mystery/thriller aspect second, and characterization and plausibility fit in whereever there is room. That being said, Palmer is extremely good at writing the medical thriller, and this one is no exception. Holbrook is a likable character, even if he does sometimes do some dumb things that make the reader cringe (for instance, breaking into a secured office after hours to look at files, then leaving the files out on the desk in plain sight while he hides from a security guard.)
The reader does have to suspend belief in a few instances-- the involvement of the Russian mafia, for example, but overall, this is a good, fast-paced read. Readers who enjoy medical suspense will enjoy this book.
