From the first time I saw Miro's work to the latest time I saw the same work, the images strike me as freshly and as mysteriously as ever. I cannot look at a Miro without seeing something new on each visit. I've come to appreciate that the seeming randomness of images and compositions are based on carefully plotted notebooks rendered in seemingly effortless fashion in the final works.
Anyone who has looked at many of Miro's works has little trouble discerning ladders, suns, stars, women, men, and various birds. But what do all those other references mean? Jacques Dupin combines an exceptionally large number of images in this book with the patience to decode works that would otherwise remain obscure to the casual Miro fan.
Miro's style also skips around like a Mexican jumping bean from one period to another. Jacques Dupin has many plausible arguments for what those shifts mean.
I was particularly grateful for the new chapters to this essential, twice-enhanced resource that elaborate on the role of poetry in Miro's expositions.
Some of Miro's figures seem more like nightmares than symbols and that's what they are: nightmares about coming savagery, war, and loss. Reading this book allowed me to have a greater understanding for Miro's depth of feeling, something the works speak eloquently about but not always with enough illumination into the foundations of the artist's perspective.
You may think you know Miro, but unless you have a doctorate in art history specialized in Miro, you need this book.
