Book Reviews of Mister Pip

Book Review: implausible
Summary: 1 Stars

Despite all my friends' recommendations, I found this story to be highly implausible. It is set in a real place (Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea) and the miners' strike and the military actions are also real. But - it is a stretch too far to suggest that isolated village children could comprehend the complex English of a Dickens' novel. The author goes to great pains to point out the community's lack of sophistication and limited connection with the outside world. How, then, could they possibly understand Dickens' world or his language? Sorry, I gave up after about 30 pages.

Book Review: ~Very Well Written~Very much enjoyed it!
Summary: 5 Stars

Complex, tragic, bitter-sweet; everything about this book felt TRUE! A story of isolation, guerrilla warfare, poverty, despair and violence ran counter-point to cooperation, determination and hope. A story of human failures, disappointments, petty jealousies, personal redemption, and day to day survival against tremendous odds!!

Mr. Watt's reading of "Great Expectations" (or rather his version of the book) creates an escape to another world of imagination; a wonderful distraction from the horrors of day to day life on this remote and increasingly harsh island.

Toward the end of the book, the reader is transported to England, where we finally solve the mystery of who Mr. Watts was, as well as who he was not.

A beautifully crafted story with so many messages woven throughout; well worth the time!!
