Book Reviews of Mommy?Book Review: A Treasure Trove for the Imagination Summary: 5 StarsI'm always on the lookout for new, books to share with my third graders. I was so excited to see Maurice Sendak's new book Mommy? I eagerly shared it with my students. Because there are no words, they were able to tell the story many different ways, and from different points of view. The paper engineering kept them anxioulsly waiting to see what was in store next. I would highly recommend this book to stimulate talk about character, setting, plot, problem and solution. Every time we reread it we find something new to make us smile.
Book Review: Not Just For Kids Summary: 5 StarsSendak's pop-up book is adorable and just as fun for adults as it is for kids. I don't recommend it for young toddlers tho because it could be damaged by uncontrolled hands. It is very detailed and has pages full of different illustrations that are Sendak's trademark. I highly recommend this book for 5 on up.
Book Review: Adults should turn the pages! Summary: 4 StarsHaving only fairly recently become really interested in pop up books, my experience with them has been fairly limited. I don't think this is a book for young children to read by themselves, as the workings could be easily destroyed unless handled with some care. "Mommy?" is a classic Sendak book, however, and will delight fans of all ages- even if the older fans may need to turn the pages for the first several years. As far as pop-up books go, it is innovative in its approach; utilizing movement as an integral part of the storytelling, a device which is fairly unique to pop-ups but which many fail to utilize.
Book Review: OOOH! Mommy! What A Book! Summary: 5 StarsOne of the best pop-up books ever! There is a surprise and delight on every page. Better get two - one for the kids and one for you!
Book Review: Very Disappointing Summary: 2 StarsI expected more from Maurice Sendak. No text. The illustrations and pop-ups were merely adequate.
