Book Reviews of Monster Island: A Zombie Novel

Book Review: Loved it.
Summary: 4 Stars

I don't often review books, but I'll make an exception here.

I saw this book a few times, read the cover then put it back. There was something about school girl zombie killers that put me off. But eventually I caved in and I brought it.

I really enjoyed it and found it to be a real page turner. I normally only read on the train to/from work but I finished this off on a Saturday afternoon. My only disappointment was it was a short book (379 pages). But every page was interesting.

So, great book, really looking forward to reading the next one, and don't be put off by the school girl zombie killers. It makes perfect sense.

Book Review: Missed a triack
Summary: 1 Stars

This book annoyed the hell out of me, Why travel all the way to New York, when you could easily reach Greece,Italy, France, Spain or UK in a couple of days by boat????

Shame there was a half-decent story in there waiting to come out, spoilt by that huge plot hole, A Scottish Bog Mummy and a giant Zombie.

Book Review: The Killing Joke
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this book on the strenght of all the good reviews it got...

But it seems these people were playing a cunning trick and the joke is on me for buying this novel.

It bored the life out of me!

Book Review: Zombies?
Summary: 2 Stars

I brought both Monster Island and Monster Nation and DONT plan on getting the third part.

They were an OK read if you have nothing else, these were given to my local charity shop as they had no re-read value to me.

The Zombie idea has been going for decades now and yes things need to be done to change the same old story BUT zombies that can go invisible or have telepathic powers to control other zombies or even humans is WAY to far.

I would suggest you leave this book and try David Moody and his Autum series

Book Review: A simple compelling read
Summary: 3 Stars

If you're in need of a quick fix of zombie fiction I recommend this book quite highly, it's got a decent story and is chock full of great zombie moments.

On the other hand if you're looking for a lengthy tale to get your teeth into then look elsewhere. The book is extremely simply written, with 'quick-link' descriptions of characters and locations (ie "the control stick was similar to that of a Playstation control pad"). Assuming the reader has already used a playstation is a bit poor.

Fortunately most people know what New York City looks like, so most areas are easy to imagine, but character wise I was completely lost at trying to picture most of them. This is a shame, as books require the author to provide these visual foundations for the reader, without them it's hard to become all that involved with the story.

Having said that I stuck with it, it's a good story and I wish the author well with their writing and hopefully it'll improve in time.
