Book Reviews of Monster Rally

Book Review: Something Fresh and Original
Summary: 5 Stars

I very much enjoyed reading Monster Rally. This collection of reviews and essays was a surprising departure from the same staid, bland and often uninspired texts on cinema. Monster Rally provides an intelligent and scholarly approach to horror and scifi cinema by discussing varied and interesting topics. However, it accomplishes this with unique, real-world and often humorous perspectives given by authors who are obvious fans not only of horror and science fiction but of all film in general. I would recommend this text to those who desires a fresh viewpoint on film or to anyone who wishes to read an enjoyable non-fiction work.

Book Review: The Gold Standard in Horror Essays/Critique
Summary: 5 Stars

"Monster Rally" adds depth to genres that most take for granted: the weird, the paranormal and the "lowly" horror film. Through a series of well thought-out reviews, critiques, and essays, the contributors lovingly review various aspects of such "subcultures", making this a must-read. Whether examining the conspiracies behind the Roswell UFO Incident of 1947 or the Lovecraftian influences within TV's "Dark Shadows", "Monster Rally" manages to engage the reader through entertaining and thoughtful writing on a variety of subjects. I was struck by how much this book brings to mind some of the great zines of the 80s/90s at certain points (cultural commentary of "Answer Me!" in one particular essay, combined with the film critique of a "Film Threat" or "Rue Morgue" in a few, and throw in a helping of the the "weird" histories/biographies present in many unnamed publications); all the better for it! I commend the Editor for the inclusion of electrifying articles examining topics as diverse as 50's Sci-Fi make-up artists, Horror films as morality plays, and Mexican Wrestling films in popular culture. I look forward to reading anything the contributors decide to publish in the future, and will closely follow the career of Editor S. Michael Wilson, as this book suggests he will soon move on to great things!
