Book Reviews of Monte WalshBook Review: Best Western Summary: 5 Stars
Having lived the life of a cowboy I consider my self an authority. I've also read my share of westerns and this has to be one of the all time greatest.
Book Review: Best book about life on the range ever written Summary: 5 Stars
I was raised in the cattle country of northcentral Montana around old cowpunchers and this book describes the character of these men like no other. The toughness of body, depth of character and love of life that Jack Schaffer brings out in the pages of this book are true to life. I cannot remember how many times I have read the book, but I have worn out two copies. If tales of the old West are your pleasure, this book can't be beat. It is followed closely by Charles M. Russell's "Trails Plowed Under."
Book Review: Can't add to the rest, but ... Summary: 5 Stars
I don't know what to add to the other reviews except to say that this has become one of my favorite books. The structure is a little quirky, it starts as a novel, changes into a series of short stories, then converts to the novel's ending. But the stories are great. The story line does not mirror the movie (either version), its better with a different - and more approprate twist at the end. Can't recomend it highly enough. If you like the genre, you'll love the book.
Book Review: Cowboy to the bone Summary: 5 Stars
I have lived the life of a cowboy. I know what goes on with horses and cattle. This book is a good depiction of a real cowboys lifestyle. Some people think that the American cowboy has gone the way of the Indian; but I assure you there are still people out there like Monte Walsh, riding bad horses and people like Chet Rollins, roping ornery critters. This is an excellent book for anybody who has ever dreamed of being a cowboy and even for the folks in the city who feel like they might have a little cowboy in them somewhere. Read it...live it.
Book Review: Definately in a class by 5 Stars
I have just finished this book. It took me more than 3 months to read it. The style of writing takes some getting used to and I kept putting it aside, but I never put it away. I'm glad that I didn't. Upon finishing it, I found that Mr. Schafer's style of writing this book had grown on me, and like very few other novels that I have read, gave me a feeling of sadness that Monte Walsh has an ending. It is a book that I will read again for sure. This is not just a western novel, it is a true classic. It will always have a place on my bookshelf.
