Book Reviews of Moon Called (Mercy Thompson Series, Book 1)Book Review: Wonderful! Summary: 5 StarsFor all you old Anita fans that miss the orginial books in the series. Here we have a strong woman herione that kicks butt, fixes car, and is relatable all in the same package! She's not stronger than any man or pretends to be, but is still incredible self-confident. The men are not falling over themselves to bed her, but yet, she still has a few that could possible become more than just a bit interested in her. There are skin walkers (our herione), werewolves, and vampires. (Oh my!) They're sexy, they're fun, they're overbearing. I LOVED IT! And yet, she didn't have to use sex to lure anyone in and still have a must have--must read--book. As a matter of fact, there is no sex in the book what so ever. Imagine that Hamilton, a book with no sex?
Okay, well anyway, you get the point. I can't wait for the next, and I certainly hope there will be one.
Book Review: Really Great but not LKH Summary: 4 StarsReading the other reviews, I see that a lot of people compare Briggs to Laurell K. Hamilton with most giving Briggs the upper hand, but I think LKH wins hands down. Anita Blake is foolhardy sometimes, while Brigg's Mercy is a more likeable and intelligent heroine; however, LKH wins for character development and world-building hands down, particularly if you compare Mercy to Merry Gentry, my favorite LKH heroine. I found that the narrative slowed to a crawl in parts of Moon Called with Mercy spending pages contemplating who-done-it and werewolf politics. While Mercy's love interests were interesting, they lacked physicality (I'm still not sure what Samuel looked like). Finally, while some of ya'll might complain about Hamilton's excessive love scenes, I could have used a good love scene in Moon Called. There was nary a one! Overall, I really enjoyed Moon Called, I'm looking forward to reading any sequels, and I recommend that romantic fantasy afficionados read it; but LKH's novels are still better.
Book Review: cant put it down Summary: 5 StarsKind of a mix between Anita Blake (by Laurell K. Hamilton) and Bitten (by Kelley Amstrong). Just draws you in and you'll say just one more chapter until the book is done. Good story with great character development.
Book Review: Her best novel yet! Summary: 5 StarsPatricia Briggs has always written enjoyable books, but this was phenomenal. I read it straight through in one night. The main character, Mercy, is spunky and humble, and up to her eyeballs in problems out of her control.
Fans of Laurell K. Hamilton's early Anita Blake novels (who don't like the latest books) should flock to Mercy Thompson. With this book, Briggs has definitely entered the big leagues of writing. Highly recommended!!
Please--let there be sequels!
Book Review: Over The Moon Classic Summary: 5 StarsIf I could give this book ten stars, I would. This book was a smattering of 'Kitty and the Midnight Hour', a dollop of Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan books, a dash of Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake novels and a sprinkle of 'Urban Shaman'. This book had everything I could possibly want and more: great characters, a wonderful story and enough intrigue to keep me wanting more.
Moon Called is about a new breed of shapeshifter who has the ability to turn into a coyote. Her name is Mercedes 'Mercy' Thompson. She owns and runs her own garage in The Tri-Cities, Washington. Our story begins when a runaway werewolf, Mac, finds himself at Mercy's garage looking for work for a few bucks. When another werewolf accompanied by a human comes trailing after Mac, Mercy learns that Mac was drugged, encaged and sold to another Alpha Male of another area. That's when the trouble starts. Soon Mercy is involved in a scheme to have the Marrok (The Ulrfic or Werewolf King, for better terms) killed. Who also just happens to be her foster father.
More is the fact that the night that Mac turns up dead on her porch, her sexy neighbor Adam, who is the local werewolf Alpha, is attacked by unknown visitors. Mercy, going with her gut instinct, takes Adam on a roadtrip bleeding and wounded to get help, traveling to her old hometown where she grew up and facing memories she would rather forget, namely a studmuffin werewolf by the name of Samuel.
As the story winds along, Mercy ends up seeking the help of her old boss, Zee, who you learn is a metalworking goblin. (The fey make appearances in this book, just so you know, but only as a shadowing part of the story) Mercy also ends up seeking the help of her vampire friend Stefan. She then finds herself toe to toe with the Mistress of the local vampire sithen, and not in a good way when the mistress tries to take a bite out of Samuel. Wait, there's more.
Just when you think Adam's pack is behind his attack, all the peices start to fall together and you learn the enemy is a little closer to home than you think.
This was an awesome read, one that I know I will read over and over. If Patricia doesn't make a series for Mercy, I think alot of fans will be more than just a little disappointed. She has to! Mercy's character was everything I was hoping it to be: down to earth, couragous and powerful in her own right. Hands down, I can tell you this character is going to give Anita Blake a run for her money! (Much like C.E Murphy's Joanne Walker aka Siohban Walkingstick) Since I had never read any of Patrici's work before this, I was very impressed. Excellent job!
I'm always on the look out for new authors and different perceptions on the whole werewolf/vampire world. Patricia's perception was refreshing and totally captivating. If you are looking for something new in this type of genre, I recommend picking up this book. You won't be disappointed. I promise.
