Book Reviews of Morning Glory

Book Review: A wonderful long story
Summary: 4 Stars

I just could say, this book contain 35% romance, 35% reality during WWII, 30% court case & a wonderful ending. Very interesting book.
I read this book not in a hurry, & its not chasing me also. Not a keeper for me, but worth reading. I always admire Lavyrle Spencer's after reading "Hummingbird". Another from her in my TBR file : Years & Twiced Love.

Book Review: Compared to other romance novels... this one is great!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am so tired of the new and cheesy novels out there in the romance section. I looked up what people considered one of the top 20 all time romance novels and this one was on it. I totally agree. This is a beauty and so original. What a great story. The hero isn't rich, she isn't a beauty and they don't live in a castle. What we have is a story all too real in the depression era. We have a widow who is pregnant with her third child and an ex convict. What a hero and heroine for a story and what a story it is. It is told in three parts really. The first is how they meet, the second is during WWII and the third puts his character on trial.

This is a wonderful read and a classic one at that. I'm so glad this book is still out there. The hero is a total loser by his standards. He pays jail time for killing a prostitute and was he really responsible? The hero pays over and over again in life. Along comes a strange, yet straight forward woman who is dirt poor with 2 babies and a third on the way. It's the depression and she needs a husband. That time period, a widow could be doomed with such small children. She is practical about her situation. She's willing to take on an ex con and believe his side of his story. She has no real choices. He is dirt poor also and can't get a job as an ex con. He trades his labor to keep up her run down farm for a dry place to sleep and food to eat.

She can't pay him. He's so poor that a barn to sleep in and food to eat is heaven. Wearing her dead husband's clothing is more than he ever owned. He was orphaned at birth and has had a tough life. She also had a weird childhood with strange grandparents. Neither knew anything normal. He made bad choices and he decides that she is a good choice. He isn't turned off by her pregnancy. She's not a head turner, but he respects a good woman with good values. All he has ever known are bad women with loose morals. He sees her as a mother figure and a good woman. At this point in his life, he's old enough to realize that is worth a fortune to him. He works hard for her to prove himself. She's tough as nails and yet soft and warm with her children. Together they must overcome much and build a future together.

She had advertised for a husband, but he's just happy working her farm and being fed. He doesn't push her into marriage, but eventually they do marry and it's a friendship marriage. A marriage of convenience. It's all so awkward and sensual and heartwarming. The love story and romance will take you away. You won't care if he isn't some lord, she isn't a beauty and they are both poor as dirt. He's the ultimate hero to take care of kids that aren't his own and to take care of her. Their story builds as does their love that started out as a way for both of them to survive. This will leave you in tears and have you cheering for them. Timeless and very romantic.

Book Review: Great book!
Summary: 5 Stars

A woman on her own, trying to get by hires a passer-by to help out. He's an ex-con, though, and the town folks don't accept him any more easily than they accept Elly. Elly has been a misfit for years, and she and Will become great friends and then lovers. It's a tender, love story, full of hardship and misfortune, but they overcome it. I truly love Lavyrle Spencer's books, and this is one of the best for my taste.

Book Review: Love this book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm on my 3rd read of this book. Every time, I read it, the story becomes more vivid to me. Ms. Spencer's writing leads you right into the story and you begin to live it.

In this story, two lonely people, find each other in the midst of the depression and WW2. Will, a good, decent man who went to prison because of a happenstance, and Eleanor, who was born to a family who had no love to give here, meet, fall in love, despite all of their life experiences. This is how a relationship should be.

The first time I read this book, I didn't put it down until I finished it. The second time, I read it to my husband during a long cross country ride. This time, I'm reading it slowing and stopping after each chapter to absorb Ms. Spencer's words.

I only wish I could give this book a "perfect" 10 rating.

Book Review: My favorite Spencer romance
Summary: 5 Stars

This story is my favorite Lavyrle Spencer book, and one of my favorite all time romances. I read a libray edition the first time, but was glad to see a new paperback version in the stores. It is one you can reread again and again. The characters draw you into their lives and make you care about them.
