Book Reviews of Mornings on Horseback: The Story of an Extraordinary Family, a Vanished Way of Life and the Unique Child Who Became Theodore RooseveltBook Review: A Must for history buffs Summary: 5 StarsMcCullogh takes you into a interesting period of time and doesn't overdo. I liked Truman, however, this one has parallels we see today and we can all learn a lot from history. The writing flows and before you know it, The Ending which comes too soon.
Book Review: excellant Summary: 5 StarsI would call this the best of McCullough's books. Yes, a book of a dead era, of a dead social order, of a dead America, and finally of a dead President. The first half of the book ends with Teddy's father's death. The goodness of Sr. and the closeness of the Roosevelt family is very, very interesting. Too close for my liking. Their closeness may have been good but too close for my liking. I have read extensively of Teddy Roosevelt and he still remains a mystery to me. An extraordinary mind but I do not think he had all his oars in the water. This book is an excellant book on many levels. I recommend this book completely.
Book Review: Wonderful description of a vanished lifestyle Summary: 5 StarsThe book really makes you feel as though you are back in the late 1800s. While I also found that I don't really like the very rich and was appalled at all the killing of animals for sport, the book is an excellent means of visiting the period.
Book Review: Fascinating Story of the Development & Growth of Teddy Roosevelt Summary: 5 StarsDavid McCullough is one my favorite historical story tellers. His research is always excellent & writing style interesting to read. This book reveals the background of Roosevelt's father's and mother's families and their impact on the formation of the young man who would become president and a great environmentalist, in terms of what that word used to mean when my father was a forest ranger. McCullough's use of personal letters and other older documents always highlight his story telling. He captures the culture the young man grew up in with all of its conflicts and social structures. It is history with a sociological touch that adds to the story. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.
Book Review: The Roosevelt Family Summary: 5 StarsThis is a wonderful and beautiful story not just of a young TR, but of the entire Roosevelt family. I read the book in a couple of days and could not put it down. It was a well written story of a unique family. Well done to Mr. McCullough.
