Book Reviews of Mosaic: Pieces of My Life So Far

Book Review: Out in the Open
Summary: 4 Stars

This book is like sitting down with a friend who knows how messy life can be. I read it cover to cover and realized when flipping through later that somehow I had missed a page or two. There are no easy answers about decisions made but it is not our life that is on display. The writing is layered, poetic and very real. How Amy begins her day with "Our Father" is inspirational -- in fact, I will borrow this passage for the retreat at our church. Literary masterpiece or not, Mosaic offers the reader nuggets of gold: faith is the communal thread that binds us and compassion is the living water that refreshes. To quote vintage Amy: "No one was ever healed through judgment."

Book Review: Mumble Jumble
Summary: 1 Stars

Never been much of an Amy fan but did read this book. Seems like Amy completely forgets where her wonderful children came from. Other than mentioning her husband, Gary as "the family" or the "children's father", or in the back of the book, she does mention him as "her guitar player", Amy completely overlooks him in this book that is suppose to be about "her life"...of which, she shared 16 or 17 years with Gary Chapman. She reveals in the book, endless vacations and trips with "friends", "children", "family" etc., but never with her husband at the time. All this gushing comes later about Vince Gill. Maybe if Amy had stayed home more and tried to work out her problems with Gary Chapman, instead of turning to Vince Gill, the marriage could of worked. Instead, two homes were wrecked and children's lives changed forever.

I feel like this is a self serving book by a woman who is probably not anymore "connected" to a higher power than a lot of others. She just makes a good living appearing to be.

Book Review: BITS of pieces of her life is more like it...
Summary: 1 Stars

I've always liked Amy but never been a finatic fan. I was interested in finding out more about the person she is but don't know much more about her after finishing her book. She doesn't talk about her divorce or her romance with Vince or open up very deep about anything at all, with maybe the exception of battling depression. The entire book reads pretty much like the boring timeline of her life at the end of the book, and the pages detailing her awards and honors. Come on, Amy! If you expect us to buy your book, open up a little and let us in. Your fans care more about you than you protecting your good girl image. Have a little faith.

Book Review: Thoroughly enjoyed Amy Grant's "Mosaic"
Summary: 4 Stars

Amy Grant did a great job in writing this book. It's not a tell all....or a chronological bio...but it reveals moments in her life that made and impact on her. These are moments, so many of us can relate too. You totally feel like you might be having a conversation with a friend over a cup of coffee when reading her words. When I finished the book, I wanted to start it over again. The quality, art and photos are just beautiful. Very nicely done. This book would make a great gift for someone.

Book Review: A Deeply Moving Journey --- Wonderfully Told
Summary: 5 Stars

Like Karen Carpenter, Amy Grant is gifted with a unique and rare vocal talent. From her earliest beginnings that gift shines: even on older tracks the clarity of her voice is absolutely amazing.

In "Mosaic" the musician parts the curtains and talks about life itself. She is surprisingly candid about the pain and brokenness that has framed parts of her journey; her honesty will surprise some readers but bless all of them.

In writing, Amy the musician dwells on other facets of her often-public life: being a good mom, raising kids, coping with divorce, surprised by remarriage. It's a story many 21st century adults immediately relate to and learn from: this is life as we know it.

Never a "puff piece" or publicity sheet, 'Mosaic' takes the reader on a deeply personal journey as Amy shares the ups and downs, the hidden thoughts and the back-stories behind music, drama and celebrity.

You needn't be a music fan to enjoy this book, but if it's been a while, consider picking up an Amy Grant CD as well. Both in writing and in the recording studio, Amy's unique voice represents a stunning talent.
