Book Reviews of Mother of Pearl

Book Review: Waste of Time and Energy
Summary: 1 Stars

Oprah's books usually don't catch my attention, but since this was a hardcover at two bucks, I figured it might help while away the time this summer. This book is a complete and total MESS. I can't decide which is the most annoying and distracting: the pseudo-dreamlike images, the incredibly stupid names Haynes gives her characters, the time-worn "who's the father?" plot device, the derivitive southern gothic elements... oh I could go on and on. Usually I like to give a book the benefit of the doubt and keep reading regardless. But why I kept on til the bitter end with this one is beyond me.

This book was horrible on so many levels. At two bucks, I got robbed!!

Book Review: Wasted time and cash!
Summary: 1 Stars

It sounds like it would be a good book, and might actually have been, if the author had stuck to any of the dozen or so storylines she started. Interesting ideas wither on the vine as Hayes jumps to something/someone new or more convinient in order to somehow justify one of the most insultingly implausible endings I've come across in quite a while. A total disappointment.

Book Review: Well worth it
Summary: 4 Stars

My friend recommended this book, and it was well worth reading it. I always check other reviews before starting a new book, and this time I was afraid I would not like reading this book. I am glad I was wrong.
Mother of Pearl has many characters, including Valuable Korner, daughter of the town's whore. It was set in a small town in Mississippi in the late 1950s.
Melinda Haynes has a unique way of telling the story. It is not an easy reading, by the way. You just can't skip a word she wrote. This was her first novel, and she did a great job. She used her own Southern roots and language to describe the characters and the events.
I recommend this book, but it is not one of those novels you just cannot put down, no matter what. It can get boring sometimes, but in the very next chapter you are hooked again. I really enjoyed reading it, and I plan on reading it again someday.

Book Review: a pearl in the oyster
Summary: 4 Stars

Once again, I found myself vacillating on whether to invest my time reading on "Oprah" recommended book. But I am certainly glad I decided to give this book a try.The first couple of chapters were difficult due to the dialogue "speak".However once I got the hang of it I became totally captivated with these characters and their story.I have recommended this book to all my friends and I am now recommending anyone who reads these customer reviews to give this one a try.You will not be sorry.

Book Review: mother of pearl
Summary: 5 Stars

Hard to believe this was a first novel. It's the kind of writing that, even as you race through the book to find out what happens, you stop and reread a sentence or paragraph because it's so rich and textured and beautiful. It's almost too bad it's an Oprah pick because it's a lot smarter, more daring and challenging than her average fare. From start to finish, "Mother of Pearl" is a treasure.
