Book Review: solid information for the DIY motorcycle mechanic

It is written in the typical Haynes style of numerous short paragraphs, each tackling a specific point, with copious supporting photographs and diagrams. The language is kept simple, the structure is clear and no background in mechanics is necessary to follow all the explanations.

There are many different chapters. In some ways the most interesting are those giving information on subjects you won't find explained specifically in the service manuals: the workshop, tools and tool usage, materials, fasteners, working with plastics, chemicals, cleaning techniques, machine tools and so on. There are other chapters more centred on bike tasks, whether it be for the engine, frame, suspension or other areas. While the exact procedures for a given bike would be found in its service manual, here a great deal of background information is also included, giving an overview of the techniques needed. I certainly feel that reading these chapters in parallel with the descriptions from my service manual gives me a better feel for and understanding of the jobs I embark on.

All in all I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn more about looking after his or her bike - whether it is for routine maintenance or dealing with the consequences of a breakdown or damage to the machine. DIY mechanics all know that they save themselves money by working on their own machines and most, myself included, also get a great deal of satisfaction from doing so. This book is an ideal companion for your efforts.
