Mrs Craddock is about a highly eligible young woman who falls for a Mills & Boon-type himbo - big, strong, phlegmatic, well-liked and almost a father figure. She's intoxicated by her love for him, or perhaps her love for love, only to discover what we the reader suspect: he's a moron. How this theme resonates today, for so many women who fall for the image in the hope that substance will later emerge, which it never can. Depending on one's circumstances, you'll either read it and laugh, or read it and weep!
