Book Review: Buy Ellridge's book if you want a light hearted read...

This book is certainly beautifully illustrated, and that is the main reason why I would recommend it. If you are buying this from an art historian's point of view, then I do not recommend it for its accuracy, as it talks about 'Alan' Strindberg, instead of August Strindberg, and about Mucha living in Montparnasse in his early Paris years, when in fact he lived in Montmartre. There are only four chapters, for a book that contains quite a lot of writing, with rather vague headings, making it really difficult to find anything, if you are looking for a specific aspect of his work, or time in his life. The writing focuses on Alphonse Mucha's life (which is not particularly exciting) as opposed to his works. However, unlike many art books the language is free of the usual uncomprehensible art jargon, which makes it easy to read. Generally speaking, Mucha's works alone are beautiful for what they are, and don't need to be over-analysed and therefore ruined. This is why this book is a pleasure to flick through, but if you are looking for a more accurate report of the artist and his work, then I would highly recommend you buy 'Alphonse Mucha:The Spirit of Art Nouveau' by Victor Arwas & others, which contains everything you might ever want to know on the artist, and his links with other people and movements, with lots of illustrations.Buy Ellridge's book if you want a light-hearted read and a good taster of the artist.
