Book Reviews of My Big Girl Potty

Book Review: Worth A Look
Summary: 3 Stars

Both Mommy and Daddy actively participating in Ashley's potty training process. Ashley realistic transitions from diapers to "special big-girl underpants" over time, not instantly. Author Joanna Cole uses questions to draw the child into the story ("Do you wear diapers, too?") as an encouraging parent would. The story concludes with ten common sense tips, such as "Don't rush!" and "Never scold or punish." and "Use a diaper at nap time..."

We have read almost every potty book available on the market as of 9/2003 (over two dozen!). Most fit into two categories: INSTRUCTIONAL books that introduce the skills needed to master the potty; and those that are primarily ENTERTAINING, for children who understand what is supposed to happen on the potty, but need extra time to make it happen.

I think My Big Girl Potty fits more in the INSTRUCTIONAL category for the following reasons:

1) It identifies the purpose of the potty.
2) It specifies bodily functions such as "poop" and "pee."
3) Shows the transition from diapers to big kid underwear.
4) Includes the hand washing step.

For other potty books that are instructional, check out What to Expect When You Use the Potty by Heidi Murkoff or You Can Go to the Potty by Martha Sears.

Book Review: a great book for potty training!
Summary: 5 Stars

My 26-month-old daughter enjoys reading this book. She especially likes that Ashley has a bunny, since my daughter is very fond of bunnies! I think this book is well-written and has helped my daughter with her potty training. Definitely worth the money!

Book Review: age-appropriate for 2s
Summary: 5 Stars

This was one of three books we purchased when we introduced the potty. It has significantly less text per page and is just simpler than the Mr. Rogers one and the Koko Bear one. I found it age-appropriate and positive. The vibe is very "you can do it!" There is not a lot of "mommy and daddy are so proud of you," or even, "you're a big girl now" stuff, apart from the title. My daughter likes the book and has absorbed the focus on underpants being the ultimate goal.

Book Review: cute book
Summary: 4 Stars

My daughter loves this book. She wants it read over and over. There is a good evolution of the little girl in the book receiving a potty from her parents, then trying it, then finally using it, then shopping for underpants. It also asks questions which my daughter likes to answer. It gets her more involved. She is not potty trained yet but hopefully this book is getting her to think about it more.

Book Review: very cute book, says what i wanted it to say
Summary: 4 Stars

my daughter is still not potty trained but i think if anything has helped book/toy-wise, it was this one, it's gentle and instructive, though not explicit.
