Book Reviews of My Boys Can Swim!: The Official Guy's Guide to Pregnancy

Book Review: Husband thought it was funny....but reused jokes
Summary: 2 Stars

The jokes weren't original, and there was a serious lack of informative material in there....

Book Review: Highly Recommend for New Dads.
Summary: 5 Stars

I sent this book to my friend's husband as a gift, and he not only called to say how much he liked it, but he has recommended it to all of his "pregnant" friends. It's the best present you can give to average guy who will read nothing about pregnancy, or who doesn't read much at all! Highly recommend.

Book Review: 5 Stars light and fun
Summary: 5 Stars

my wife slipped this book under my pillow and used it to announce the big news. I don't think she ever intended for me to reead it, and frankly I just set it aside with the dozen or so books on pregnancy she had already purchased for herself. As we began to inform friends and family of the pregnancy, I received two more copies of this book in the mail as gifts! I figured that there had to be more to the book than a funny title. So I started to read it. It is actually really funny, especially the illustrations. It's more a collection fo stories about what every day people go through. I now find myself recommending it to others.

Book Review: Come On, It is A Funny Book!
Summary: 5 Stars

Recent reviews have criticized Davis for "ripping off" Seinfeld. But Davis explicitly attributes the book's title to George Costanza at the beginning of the book, signalling the reader that the book's tone and sensibility are Seinfeld-like. That is why the book succeeds: it is a dry, witty and light riff from a slightly befuddled guy, as Seinfeld was. Criticism that the book does not give "useful information" or "real advice" clearly misses the point. Davis did not claim to have written an advice book. Anyone who criticizes the book for failing to give "real life advice" is taking himself a bit too seriously. It is like criticizing Seinfeld for being insensitive: duh. The book was written to be fun and make people laugh and in that it overwhelmingly succeeds.

Book Review: very disappointing in actual knowledge passed on
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this book for my husband because that was the exact quote he used when we found out we are expecting, "My boys can swim!" And while he's a HUGE Seinfeld fan, he was still not very amused by the annecdotes in this book. I read it, and found it completely devoid of any useful information for future dads, and couldn't BELIEVE the author was up until 5am writing, as he says at one point in the book. He gives about 2% real advice and 98% stories about his wife and annecdotes from other friends who have had kids, and devotes WAY too much time to telling you what NOT to name your baby, including a chart (a whopping 3 columns and 3 rows) of celebrities and their wacky baby names. Terrible book
